Oncology Patient Navigator Training Features Shared Decision-Making
Shared decision-making in cancer care is in the news! See this article, for example, that urges the inclusion of family care givers in decisions made about relatives' health care. Want to know more? The GW Cancer Center recently released a fully updated online training, Oncology Patient Navigator Training: The Fundamentals, designed to provide a foundation of knowledge for all patient navigators who work with people affected by cancer. The course includes a module on shared decision-making. Check it out today!
The August Navigation Refresh, on the Journal of Oncology Navigation & Survivorship (JONS) website, explores the role of patient navigators in immuno-oncology. From helping patients understand treatment and manage unique side effects to connecting them with financial and specialty care resources, navigators are essential partners in supporting patients receiving immunotherapy. Navigation Refresh is written by Mandi Pratt-Chapman, PhD, Associate Director, Community Outreach & Engagement at the George Washington University (GW) Cancer Center.
As you know, we recently released a fully updated online training, Oncology Patient Navigator Training: The Fundamentals, along with a corresponding guide (PDF) that enriches and reinforces the course's key takeaways. We are pleased to announce that a Spanish version of the guide is coming soon. Watch this space for more information or visit the GW TAP website.
Breast Cancer and Liver Cancer Awareness to Be Promoted in October
Awareness of both breast and liver cancer will be celebrated in October. The GW Cancer Center offers toolkits to support outreach efforts for both: the Breast Cancer Awareness Toolkit and the Liver Cancer Awareness Toolkit contain ready-to use social media messages, graphics and best practices designed to raise awareness, educate your community and support patients.
September is a busy month, with observances of childhood cancer, gynecological cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer. In addition, Hispanic Heritage Month will take place from September 15 - October 15. The GW Cancer Center offers a complement of health awareness toolkits to help meet your communication needs, and each toolkit includes messaging tailored to specific, diverse audiences. You will find them on the TAP website!
