Infusing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into Course Design |
At a recent Online Learning Consortium (OLC) event, we learned about the DEI Collaborative, a group of DEI experts, instructional designers, online faculty experts, and staff from 68 institutions and organizations across the United States (as well as Canada and Brazil). They’ve taken best practices from all of the major online course quality rubrics (Quality Matters included) and annotated them to include specific examples of how to incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion into course design. Their resource is constantly growing and being updated, so be sure to bookmark this one!

Calculating Calculations in the Grade Center |
This is a great time to ensure that your grade centers are correctly calculating student grades. Blackboard has default Total and Weighted Total columns, but those don’t necessarily calculate grades according to your syllabus. And with inherited courses and modified assignments we've seen that these columns can get messed up surprisingly easily.
But don’t worry- help is available! We are always happy to help untangle grade center issues or provide a second set of eyes on the calculations. Contact Alison McGuire (alisonmcguire@gwu.edu) or Laurie Lyons (lbl@gwu.edu) for assistance.

If you are using Collaborate synchronous class sessions, we’d like to encourage you to switch to Zoom. We recently spoke with an instructor who had a student who required closed captions, only to discover that Collaborate does not provide automated captions. The instructor switched to Zoom for their next office hour and all was well. The student expressed gratitude that the automated captions in Zoom worked well and allowed them to fully participate in class.
Zoom has an integration with Blackboard, and is more fully-featured and familiar to students. Any member of the IMPACT team would be happy to help you with it. Don’t hesitate to reach out.
