Happy Spring Semester, Supervisors!
We're thrilled to introduce you to our newest Student Employment team member, Jess Flynn! Supervisors of student staff members will work with Jess on posting jobs in Handshake or filling positions through the federal/state work-study referral process, and you'll definitely see her at all of our student employment events. Learn a little bit more about Jess below, and thanks for helping us welcome Jess to Puget Sound!

Hi! My name is Jess Flynn and I'm CES's new Student Employment and Program Coordinator!
I am originally from Seattle, but went to college in southern California to study Integrated Educational Studies at Chapman University.
In my free time I love to go on adventures with friends and family, explore local cafes (If you have any recommendations, please let me know!), go on runs, and have movie marathons.
I am so excited to be a part of this team and to help students along their career journeys!

Gather{Rounds} were a big hit last fall, so we're continuing this spring with a whole new lineup of topics!
We have three Gather{Rounds} planned — first Thursdays @ 11:30 a.m. — for supervisors to gather and connect.
These roundtable discussions feature topics that supervisors have suggested. Maybe it'll be a topic that YOU suggested! Next up:
- February 2: Managing your workload while also coordinating, guiding, and inspiring the work of students
-
March 2: Showing appreciation and gratitude to student staff (preparing for Student Employment Month in April)
- April: No Gather{Round} — Please join us at the Gathering of the Supervisors on Tuesday, April 18!
-
May 4: Developing Students’ Leadership Skills
|
As a reminder, you'll find us in the Misner Room of Collins Memorial Library (LIBR 127). Bring your questions, your advice, and your stories — and your lunch, if you'd like. We look forward to gathering with you!

Student Staff Compliance Training Changes: Puget Sound is switching to a new Compliance Training system, which is currently under construction. We're currently in the middle of a planned outage while we migrate to the new system.
Once the system is up and running, student staff members who need to take compliance trainings for Discrimination Awareness and Sexual Violence Awareness in the Workplace will be assigned these trainings and will receive an email with instructions on how to access the system.

Grab a moment, wherever you can find it, to say hi and check in with your student staff members.
Ask your student staff: What can I (your supervisor) do to support your efforts to perform well and learn meaningful skills in this job?
BENEFIT: Students have an opportunity to reflect on the factors that contribute to their success, which is not only helpful to you as you provide support, but also to them by providing space to articulate their needs.
As an added bonus, by asking what you can do to support your staff, you show student employees that you care about them and are invested in their success!
Follow up: Share with student staff the specific skills that you see them utilizing and developing in their job.
BENEFIT: Sharing specific affirmation of skills and talent is powerful! You acknowledge the good work and growth of the students who are on your team, cultivate a feeling of purpose and meaning at work, and plant seeds for them to start thinking about their growth and where they might use these skills in other contexts in their lives.

In the midst of the hustle and bustle during the beginning of a term, remember that you are such an important part of your student staff members' lives. Even if you don't get everything on your to-do list finished, know that you are making an impact. Thank you for the invaluable role that you play as a supervisor of students!
