National HCH Council Issues Justice Statement
In support of the burgeoning movements addressing racism and poverty in America – problems which rank high among the social determinants of homelessness and poor health – the National HCH Council has issued the statement Standing in Solidarity: In Support of the Movement for Social Justice. Please stand with us in support of justice.
Council Staff Member to Serve on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless
Darlene M. Jenkins, DrPH,  Senior Director of Programs, will serve on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless. This journal is a peer-reviewed subscription journal in its 23rd year of publication. The Journal is dedicated to innovative and timely studies in three broad areas of research: 1. Social distress and disorganization across different groups, cultures, and settings, in areas such as education, healthcare, criminal justice, economics, social services, and families. Research on disadvantaged populations is particularly welcome. 2. Clinical, epidemiological, methodological, and health services research on homelessness. Related research on poverty, inadequate or unstable housing, and associated mental and physical illnesses is encouraged. 3. New methodologies for research on social distress and the homeless. These methodologies can include newly developed instruments, measures, and tests; novel recruitment and sampling strategies; advanced analytic techniques and statistical approaches; and technology-based solutions.
The new Editor for Journal of Social Distress and the Homeless is Jack Tsai, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry; Director of the Division of Mental Health Services and Treatment Outcomes Research at Yale University. Join a Council Committee!
Individual Members and Organizational Member Representatives of the Council are invited to volunteer for any of our several working Committees. Committees generally meet once a month by conference call, and members contribute to defining and conducting the Committee’s work (with superb staff support, of course!). This Committee list includes links to staff members to contact about participating. Committee participation is a great way to contribute, learn, get to know the Council, and advance in our leadership structure.
New In Focus: Vision and Oral Health
Vision and oral health play a salient role in an individual’s health and overall quality of life. The current issue of In Focus synthesizes recent literature on vision and oral health of individuals experiencing homelessness. It addresses the prevalence of vision and oral health diseases, unmet needs, factors impacting outcomes for these diseases, and promising practices to increase access to services. Read the issue.
Webinar: Engaging Homeless Youth: Recommendations and Resources
July 29, 2015 | 1-2 p.m. Eastern | Register
Understanding the totality of youth homelessness is essential to engagement and the development of interventions and policies that promote the wellbeing of young people experiencing homelessness. All clinicians, administrators, and policy and advocacy staff working for or with youth populations (ages 12-24) would benefit from a deeper understanding of engagement strategies. This webinar will showcase information and resources shared in the forthcoming Council publication on engaging homeless youth. At the end of the webinar attendees will be able to identify primary concepts of engagement; describe how services are part of engagement for youth; list at least three barriers to engagement; describe the importance of youth involvement and how it is integral to engagement; and most importantly locate additional resources on providing services to youth sub-populations.
Inside the Council Website: LGBTQ Tools & Support
Have you seen the Council’s LGBTQ Tools and Support page? As we reach the end of Pride month we are reminded that we still have a long way to go to increasing access and quality of care for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons expereincing homelessness. For information on how you can better serve this population, check out this tools and support page.
Open Council Staff Positions
The National HCH Council is growing and we’re happy to announce that we are seeking two new staff members for our Education Team.
We seek a full-time Training Coordinator and a Health Center Support Coordinator. More info about these positions can be found on our Careers page. Each posting expires July 24, 2015.
HCH Day: August 12, 2015
Each year for HCH Day (August 12, 2015), during National Health Center Week (August 9 – 15, 2015), consumers and staff at HCH projects organize events to highlight the important work of their projects in providing quality, comprehensive health care for individuals experiencing homelessness. Events allow HCH projects to build relationships with community partners, engage elected officials, and show appreciation for the consumers, staff, and communities that support the vital work of HCH. For ideas for your event, see NACHC’s National Health Center Week website or highlights from previous HCH day events! Please contact Katherine Cavanaugh, Consumer Advocate, (443) 703-1320, if you have any questions about planning your HCH day celebrations. Then be sure to send us pictures and tell us about your festivities!

Member Spotlight: True Worth Resource Center
The National HCH Council’s membership is comprised of approximately 75% Health Care for the Homeless programs and 25% other stakeholders including PCAs, shelters, and others. One of these non-HCH partners is True Worth Resource Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Construction is underway on a 25,000-square-foot facility with classroom space, hygiene services, office space for other homeless agencies, and storage lockers where folks can keep their belongings. It will be located adjacent to a new clinic offering medical, dental, and behavioral health services. The project will be a welcome relief for the city and the Council is proud to support our member in Fort Worth as they broaden their range of services to people experiencing homelessness.
