PROM 2017 - GATSBY

Prom 2017, Gatsby, will be held this Saturday, April 22, at The Fountain Square Theater from 7:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. After-Prom will once again be held at Brebeuf Jesuit following Prom from 11:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Parking Update:
Dean Adams and Mr. Keele spoke to students this week during the Prom Meeting about some of the issues related to parking for this year's Prom.
Students are encouraged to arrive early and give themselves plenty of time for parking.  On-street parking is free on Saturday night.
The Public Parking Lot at the corner of Shelby and Morris Street is under construction and will offer limited public parking. There is a second smaller public lot on Woodlawn Avenue, between Virginia Avenue and Shelby Street. Parking is also available in the Shelby Shoppes lot at Woodlawn and Shelby Street. Please do NOT park in the Family Dollar lot on the north side of their building.
Important Details:
  • The doors to The Fountain Square Theater will open at 7:30 p.m.
  • Students must arrive by 8:15 p.m. to be admitted to Prom.
  • Students and guests must have a valid student ID to be admitted.
  • This year, dinner will not be served at Prom. Limited quantities of appetizers and desserts will be available at the beginning of the event.
  • Students are allowed to leave Prom at any time, but will not be readmitted once they leave.
  • Doors to After-Prom will open at 11:00 p.m. Students must arrive by 11:30 p.m. to be admitted. Student IDs must again be presented to be admitted to After-Prom. Students can again leave After-Prom at any time, but will not be readmitted once they leave.
Admission to After-Prom is free and students who choose not to attend Prom may still attend After-Prom. Students not attending Prom but interested in attending After-Prom, must see Mr. Keele in the Learning Center to fill out an After-Prom form. Festivities include a DJ, inflatables, dancing, prizes, and great food. Most students bring a duffel bag and change of clothes; these bags will be numerically tagged and checked. Hangers and plastic dry cleaning bags will be available, and students can plan to change out of their Prom clothes at Brebeuf.
Parents, please share this message with your child and have a conversation specifically establishing your expectations and their responsibilities. We also request that Brebeuf Jesuit parents neither plan nor permit parties that compete with this special event. We join you in looking forward to seeing our upperclassmen spruced up and enjoying the event. Many thanks as we work together to keep those we love safe and happy on this special night.

brebeuf jesuit's incoming director of diversity and inclusion

Below is a message from Principal Greg VanSlambrook
Please join me in welcoming Mr. Corey Pettigrew to Brebeuf Jesuit, who will serve as our Director of Diversity and Inclusion beginning in the 2017-18 school year.
Mr. Pettigrew is a product of Indianapolis Catholic education, as a graduate of St. Rita’s Catholic School and Cardinal Ritter High School. He received his Bachelor’s degree in history education from Kentucky State University, and his Master’s degree in education administration from Butler University. His 20-year career in education has included teaching, coaching, and mentoring young people in a variety of environments including Ben Davis, Westfield, Northview Middle School, North Central High School, and most recently at Park Tudor School.
As Director of Diversity and Inclusion, Mr. Pettigrew will have a leadership role in our school’s work toward its vision of being an inclusive community, working closely with students, families, faculty, and staff alike. I am excited to have him aboard for this important work, and he is looking forward to learning about and being a part of our community. Please join me in welcoming Corey!
I will also take this opportunity to thank Mr. Freezell Brown for his service as our Director of Diversity and Inclusion, as he will be returning to the role of full-time faculty member in our English Department next school year. Mr. Brown has served as our Director of Diversity and Inclusion since 1995. He was the first Director of Diversity to be appointed in the entire national Jesuit network of high schools. In 2009, he was awarded a “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Jesuit Secondary Education Association (JSEA) Diversity Conference.

Faculty Spotlight

Mr. steve exline

How many years have you been at Brebeuf and in what capacities?
This is my first year at Brebeuf, but my 24th year teaching. I teach World Civ, US History and Government.
What's your favorite thing about the role you play at Brebeuf?
I love that I am able to focus just on my teaching.  In my previous job, I had so many different roles I felt like I was not able to do any of them as effectively as I would have liked. Brebeuf provides the time and support I need to be a good social studies teacher.
Describe a memorable moment from your time at Brebeuf.
The Diversity Dialogues have made a big impression on me this year.  I have been quite impressed with the openness, maturity, and thoughtfulness of the students at these Dialogues.
On a less serious note, I’ll always remember my 6th period class teaching me how to play Mafia when we had some free time. (I won)
If one of your friends was considering sending their child to Brebeuf, what would you tell them?
From what I have seen, Brebeuf is an excellent place to prepare for college.  The classes are rigorous and the schedule requires that you learn to manage your time well.  At the same time, there are amazing supports in place to help students along the way.  I am especially impressed with the academic and college counseling resources that are available.
What's something that challenges you, and how do you navigate that challenge?
This year my biggest challenge has been preparing for three new classes that I have never taught at the high school level.  That is considerably more time-consuming than I imagined it would be.  However, my schedule is built to give me time to prepare, and more importantly, the teachers in my department have helped out any time I have asked.
Who inspires you?
My two daughters. Perhaps I don’t succeed on a daily basis, but they do inspire me to try to be a better person. My older daughter is in 8th grade and loves theatre and performing. Those are things that I would have been mortified to do at her age. Her willingness to step outside her comfort zone and do challenging things inspires me. My younger daughter is an amazing wheelchair athlete. Her physical disability has empowered her, rather than limited her.  Her participation in wheelchair basketball has turned her into a leader among her teammates. She has been recognized three years in a row as a member of the All-Tournament team at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association's national tournament.  It’s impossible to spend time around wheelchair athletes and not be inspired.
What do you like to do in your spare time, when not working at Brebeuf?
I like to play golf, though I am pretty awful. I enjoy reading fiction. Time and weather permitting, I love camping with my friends and family.  However, like most parents, we spend a lot of our “spare time” at our kids’ activities.
Tell us something about you that most people don’t know…
I’ve run for public office twice as a Libertarian, one time receiving almost 3% of the popular vote in my township.
Due to having well-placed relatives, I have had the opportunity to travel to South Africa, China, the Philippines, and much of Western Europe. My wife’s extended family lives in the Philippines, so we were able to spend 2 weeks there. My brother-in-law has had jobs in Europe and Africa, so we were able to visit their family in those areas.  My younger daughter is from China, so our family had the opportunity to travel to China for her adoption when she was five.

Tuition Management for 2017-2018

Beginning in July 2017, Brebeuf Jesuit will be moving away from Smart Tuition and parterning with FACTS Tuition Management to process student billing and payments.  All families with students attending Brebeuf next year will be required to enroll with FACTS.
This week, FACTS will send an email to your primary Brebeuf email address containing a link and your unique code to enroll. You will need to enter this unique code from your online payment plan invitation email.
Please note the following:
  • Financial aid will not be applied to applicable accounts until financial aid awards are determined in May.
  • The April 2016 and May 2016 tuition payments will still be made through your Smart Tuition account.
  • All tuition accounts must be paid in full by May 30.
For more information about FACTS, please click the link below.
If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Grabowski at mgrabowski@brebeuf.org.

2017-18 Work-Study Information

Work-study is a component of the financial aid package for all incoming freshmen. In order to answer any questions and provide an overview of this process, please plan to attend an orientation on Wednesday, May 10, from 5:30-6:00 p.m. or Saturday, May 13, from 9:00-9:30 a.m. in the LGI.  This meeting should be attended by both the student and the parent(s).
There are two, three-week work sessions in the summer that mirror the summer school sessions.  Students can work from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. during the dates listed below.  Vending machines are available for snack foods or beverages.
  • Session 1: June 12-June 30
  • Session 2: July 10-July 28
Students will be assigned different types of work that include, but are not limited to: general school clean-up (building and grounds), maintenance, as well as office work to assist in the efficient running of the school.
During the school year, the work-study program takes place after school each day for 60 to 90 minutes and during school breaks when offices are open.
The maximum work-study grant is $1,000 based on 60 hours of work. The participating student does not receive a payment, but rather the work is credited against their tuition account. The credit is posted after the full 60 hours are worked.  Students who have not completed 60 hours by April 21, 2018 will receive credit for the hours they have worked at $16.67 per hour.  Parents will be responsible for paying the remaining balance to the school.
Please contact Melissa Grabowski at mgrabowski@brebeuf.org with any questions.

After-Prom 2017 - Volunteers Needed!

We are almost fully staffed...Can you help?
Brebeuf Jesuit's Mothers Association will be hosting the 2017 After-Prom Party on April 22, 2017 from 11:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. at Brebeuf Jesuit.
The After-Prom party welcomes students to come enjoy food, inflatable games and entertainment. In order to put on this great event, we need the help of parent volunteers. Please consider donating any of the requested items or taking a volunteer shift.  The results of our teamwork will ensure a safe and fun evening for our students.
Donated items may be dropped off at the Main Lobby Desk.
We are still in need of volunteers to decorate both Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.  We are also in need of volunteers to help clean up after the event.  We have an awesome plan for the kids...we just need a few more hands to pull it off!
Setup/Decoration volunteers should check in with Julie Morton the morning of April 22. All evening shift volunteers should check in at the volunteer station at the After-Prom event.
Please direct any questions to the After-Prom Chair Julie Morton at julieRmorton@gmail.com.

Congratulations to Zach Savin '19!

Congratulations to Zach Savin '19 on becoming an Eagle Scout!
On April 12, Zach received his Eagle! Zach’s project was to build two large benches that serve as storage containers for the garden committee of Fletcher Place Community Center. These containers give workers a place to sit in the shade and to put coolers on. It also is a place to store all the gardening equipment close to the garden. Fletcher Place Community Center provides assistance to those in need (low income families and homeless) on the Southside of Indianapolis.

Athletic Participation Documents and Online Registrations for the 2017-18 School Year

We are now accepting participation documents (click here to download) and online registrations (click here to register) for the 2017-18 school year.
Click here to register for SVSP Physical dates. When you click on the “click here to register” after you’ve decided which date works best, it will take you to an EZ Facility website. The page is set-up inconveniently, so scroll down a bit and under “Please select the desired registration type to continue,” select the button next to “I am an individual registering.”
Incoming Freshmen and Transfers
Incoming freshmen and transfers must have participation documents on file and be registered before attending any team-related event on campus (e.g. Wellness Center Orientation, strength & conditioning workout, open field/gym workout, Summer League, pre-season workouts, etc.).
Returning Braves
We have moved to a different online registration provider and the “REGISTER FOR SPORTS” button on brebeufathletics.org is no longer there. However, you will see "REGISTRATION" in the top menu bar. You must now click there and then click on “REGISTER FOR SPORTS.” Physicals from 2016-17 are good for 365 days, so students will not need to do anything except Register prior to Summer activities. Students must have participation documents on file and be registered prior to the first day of practice.  Click here to see those dates.
Participation documents completed by SVSP will be hand-delivered to the school. If students have their participation documents completed elsewhere, they can scan and email them to Mr. Weinstein at jweinstein@brebeuf.org, drop them off in the box on the rear of the main lobby desk, or hand-deliver them to Mr. Weinstein’s desk in the Athletic Department. To ensure items are not misplaced, it’s best to scan and email to Mr. Weinstein or hand-deliver them to Mr. Weinstein’s desk in the Athletic Department on the top floor of the Wellness Center.
If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Weinstein at jweinstein@brebeuf.org.

Support Freshman Nina Jain's Shared Steps Initiative

Brebeuf Freshman Nina Jain is organizing an initiative to collect gently used shoes for her Shared Steps program.  She has recently coordinated her efforts with Shoebox Recycling, an organization that distributes the shoes collected across the world. The shoes that cannot be distributed will be recycled.
Please note that Shoebox Recycling does not take all types of shoes.  The shoes that Shoebox Recycling will not accept are delivered to homeless shelters and domestic abuse shelters in Indiana by Shared Steps. Over the last three months, Nina has collected 150 pairs of shoes.  Over the last three years, Shared Steps has received over 3,500 pairs of donated shoes.
How can you help:
Nina will be leaving donation boxes in the Gym Lobby as well as the Main Lobby.  You can contact Nina with any questions at njain20@amdg.brebeuf.org.
