CABINET LETTER FROM DAVID HOLQUIN

Dear De La Salle Community,
I don't know about you, but I blinked and this school year flew by. After Easter vacation, it went at a very swift clip (almost as fast as sophomore Trey Caldwell), and AP exams are now upon us, and our seniors will graduate in just a few weeks. This month, final exam preparation will fill the Learning Center to max capacity, our yearbook will be shared capturing memories from throughout the school year, and Teacher Appreciation Week will fill our faculty's hearts with the reminder that they are seen and appreciated. (Many thanks to all the parents who have supported this effort to show love to the staff who show love to your boys)!

2023 Lasallian Educator of the Year
|
|
|
On April 26, Dr. Alumbaugh presented Religious Studies Instructor, Joe Grantham, with the 2023 Lasallian Educator of the Year award. This award is given annually at the St. La Salle Mass to an educator who has been chosen by their peers to exemplify the qualities of our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. The honoree is not only someone who is an exemplary educator but also someone who demonstrates an active commitment to a life of faith and expresses that commitment when they teach their students the importance of spiritual life, instilling living values.

If you have been following our news stories on dlshs.org and social media, you already know that six more of our students signed National Letter of Intent (NLI) agreements last month. Congratulations to Ryan Cesmat (swimming), Atri Feizi (wrestling), Ben Gronbach (water polo), Billy Haggerty (basketball), Joey Manzone (rugby), and Tommy Rainsford (rugby). They join a growing list of De La Salle student-athletes who have announced their college commitments for the 2023-24 school year. So far 25 NLI's have been signed. Last month also saw the publication of our spring issue of Union Magazine. If you haven't received a copy, you can view it online here. We also want to take this opportunity to once again congratulate alumnus Scott Hugo '05 for being named our Distinguished Alumnus of the Year. Scott’s tireless work fighting for social, economic, and environmental justice for Oakland residents, as well as his philanthropic activities and personal ethics, exemplify what it means to live a life of faith, integrity, and scholarship. You can read more about Scott and the work he is doing here.

There is a lot happening in De La Salle spring sports right now. Both our Golf team and our Swim team won their EBAL Championships. Swim will look to defend its NCS title this weekend and Golf will defend their NCS, NorCal, and State Titles later this month. Baseball currently sits top of the EBAL standings and will also move into NCS playoffs in a couple of weeks, and the Lacrosse team secured the #1 seed in its own NCS Playoffs and enter the quarterfinals tonight against Granite Bay. Spartans are also dominating in Track and Field right now.
Click here for a complete De La Salle spring sports update.
April's Student-Athletes of the Month are seniors Zach Elian (Swimming) and Jack Jerge (Golf). At the EBAL Championships, Zach won the 50 and 100 Freestyle with times of 20.43 and 45.05 seconds respectively. In golf, Jack shot a 72 at the EBAL Championship, leading his team to the league championship and earning EBAL MVP honors.

As we rejoice in this season of Easter, we recall a motto that appears at our school and many other Lasallian schools - Enter to Learn, Leave to Serve. The image above is from our Ven a Ver Tijuana immersion where our students truly had an opportunity to become Christ's hands and feet in service to those in need. At our Founder's Day Mass on April 26, Father LaSalle reminded us to "incarnate Christ" in our daily words and actions. As we live these 50 days of the Easter season, may we celebrate it best by truly being Christ's hands and feet as we "bless all the world."
