INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY OBSERVED

Paulette Steeves, PhD (Cree-Metis), joined us today to discuss the meaning of Indigenous Peoples Day and how it developed to reinvent Columbus Day, the diversity of Indigenous peoples of North America, and what we can do to celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day. She was born in Whitehorse Yukon Territories and grew up in Lillooet, British Columbia, Canada. She is an Indigenous archaeologist with a focus on the Pleistocene history of the Western Hemisphere. Dr. Steeves received her BA in Anthropology, Honors Cum Laude from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and her MA and PhD from SUNY Binghamton. Her dissertation, Decolonizing Indigenous Histories: Pleistocene Archaeology Sites of the Western Hemisphere, is the first dissertation framed in Indigenous Method and Theory in Anthropology within the United States. Dr. Steeves is the Interim Director of the Certificate Program in Native American Indian studies at UMass Amherst, and also a lecturer in Indigenous Archaeology.

Mountain Day - An Academy Tradition

Social Justice Council:  Dakota Access Pipeline
In solidarity with the indigenous people protesting against the Dakota Access Pipeline’s semi-legal theft of sacred land, the Social Justice Council continues to collect unopened packages of new children’s socks and underwear to donate to the OST Child Protection Services, a tribal child welfare agency located on Pine Ridge Reservation. According to this agency, these two items are major needs for the children protesting with their families at Standing Rock. So far, we have collected 150 pairs of socks and 160 pairs of underwear. Our new goal is to collect 250 pairs of each by Tuesday, October 11th. A donation bin is located in the foyer.
PUMPKIN HARVEST!
With gratitude to our neighbors on the Hicks Farm, this morning Academy students harvested pumpkins for our annual carving and Halloween celebration at the end of the month. We’re delighted to have these VERY locally grown (in our own upper field!) pumpkins to decorate our school for the next several weeks.

Uniform Day Thursday, October 13

All athletes playing or practicing on campus next Thursday should wear their full uniforms (maroon jerseys). We'll be taking some photos for our website and want you to look your Aardvark best.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE ON CAMPUS, OCTOBER 14, 1 - 6 PM
The Red Cross returns to campus next week for their yearly fall Blood Drive at The Academy!  The Blood Drive will be held on Friday, October 14, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM. Students will be bringing home donor forms (and parental consent forms, for students age 16), with the goal of every student finding at least one person to donate blood. Appointments can be made by filling out the donor form and turning it in to the Main Office, or by calling the Main Office during regular business hours, or by visiting the Red Cross Blood Drive appointment page and entering our zip code. Baked goods for donors are also a high priority, so there are ways for everyone to lend a hand.  We appreciate in advance your support of this important service event!

Academy Parents Council
Family Hike - October 15, 10 AM

Let’s get together and take a hike! We will meet at the Savoy Mountain State Forest headquarters at 10 AM. Please bring $8 to park ($10 if you are not a Massachusetts resident). We’ll hike as a group to the top of Spruce Hill and enjoy the view. Please be sure to dress for the weather and bring water and a snack to enjoy at the top. It’s a great view and foliage should be at peak. Join us, and please consider bringing prospective families along.
The trail itself is 2.6 miles round trip with a vertical rise of 680 feet, a moderate hike. It should take us around 2 – 2.5 hours of hiking time, plus however long we want to hang out on top and enjoy the view. I would plan on around four hours from the time we start our hike to the time we return. For more information on the trail we will be hiking can be found HERE.
DETAILS:
Date:  Saturday, October 15th
Meeting Time:  10 AM
Meeting Location:  Savoy Mountain State Forest
260 Central Shaft Road
Florida, MA 01247
Hike:  Busby Trail to Spruce Hill – Savoy Mountain State Forest
For further information about the hike, email parent organizer Paul Catanzaro or call him at 413-206-0303 (home) or 413-695-3737 (cell). RSVPs would be helpful, but not necessary.

PSAT Exam - Wednesday, October 19th

Sophomores and Juniors will be taking the PSAT exam on Wednesday, October 19th. This exam will last for three hours. It functions as a practice exam for the SAT that juniors will take in in January, March, May and/or June of 2017, and that current sophomores will take in their junior year. Colleges do not see the scores of this exam. Instead, the PSAT functions as a way for The Academy to help gauge where students are right now, so we can have a plan to get them where we'd like them to be by the time they take the real SAT in the second semester of their junior year.
IMPORTANT DETAILS FOR OCTOBER 19:
  • All 10th and 11th grade students need to make absolutely certain they have their calculators in school on Wednesday, October 19th for the PSAT exam.
  • All 10th and 11th grade students should make sure they bring a lunch on Wednesday, October 19th. The PSAT exam will end shortly after lunch is finished being served.
  • Any questions parents have should be directed to Neale Gay.
