Engineers are building computerized replicas of cities, and even Georgia Tech’s campus, to save lives and create a better, more efficient world for all of us. Extreme weather, congested streets, aging infrastructure — just some of the challenges that communities and their residents face every day. Solving them requires more than traditional planning; it demands tools that can anticipate problems before they happen.

The AIAA Journal has unveiled its annual open‑access “best paper” collection, spotlighting 12 standout publications—and narrowing that group even further to five exceptional works invited to join its global Author Seminar series. Among the 2026 honorees is an article by AE students W. Ding, H. Huang, and T.-J. Lee, created in collaboration with Prof. Yan Liu of the School of Mathematics.
Their paper, “Neural Network with Local Converging Input for Unstructured-Grid Computational Fluid Dynamics,” introduces a fresh, forward‑thinking neural‑network–based surrogate model tailored for unstructured‑grid CFD. The result is a technique that not only advances the state of the art but also reshapes how researchers might tackle complex aerodynamic simulations in the years ahead.
