Dear colleagues:
As you may know, the federal government has announced a shutdown, which potentially has implications for federally funded research.
During a shutdown, the electronic systems and proposal submission portals for federal research agencies typically remain operational, and funding for active awards is generally not significantly affected. However, grants staff and program officers may be furloughed, which means they will be unable to respond to inquiries, update websites, review grant applications and process new awards.
Additionally, while UT cannot bill for expenses during the shutdown, we are generally able to recover costs once the government resumes normal operations. Therefore, you may continue performing work on active sponsored awards unless otherwise notified by your sponsor or by OSP. Please reach out to OSP immediately if you receive additional instruction on specific projects from a sponsor.
Contingency plans for a government shutdown have been posted by the following agencies:
It’s important to note that, historically, federal government shutdowns have not had long-term impacts on federally funded research. Should a lengthy shutdown occur, I’ll share additional guidance.
Sincerely,
