Dear friends and colleagues,
Thank you! The Data Center appreciates the efforts of everyone who quickly jumped in to support our work surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic in New Orleans and Louisiana. We also thank all those who have supported our work to democratize data over the past 20 years. Whether your support comes in the form of a financial contribution, using our data and analysis for data-driven decisionmaking, following us on social media, or visiting our website, we are grateful.

The Data Center has always provided critical data in the most important of moments. After Hurricane Katrina we published The New Orleans Index to help guide recovery efforts. After the BP Oil Spill we began our coastal and water management series. Both illuminated the challenges, but also the opportunities that had arisen out of each disaster.

As New Orleans’ Tricentennial approached, The Data Center published The Prosperity Index, providing data on racial inequities and describing obstacles to building the inclusive economy we need for the New Orleans metro to prosper in the future.

Most recently we published real-time 2020 Census response-rate maps for parishes across the state, helping to ensure Louisiana receives its fair share of federal funding. Then everything was upended by COVID-19 and again we rapidly began producing data and analysis to help mitigate disaster through good, data-based decisionmaking.

The Data Center’s vision is of a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable region with good quality of life for all. Recent events, from pandemic to protests, reveal the interconnectedness of our fortunes…AND that we have much unfinished business.

Good data is essential for charting a path forward through uncertainty. The Data Center will continue to publish independent, objective, relevant, and rigorous data and analysis through both ordinary and turbulent times. Please consider supporting our work this GiveNOLA Day.

On behalf of The Data Center board and staff, thank you very much for your support.
