AI, Privacy and New Technologies: A View from the 19th Century
Wednesday March 25 | 12p-1p | 1400 18th Ave S A2009
We are in the midst of an important public reckoning with generative AI, grappling with its promise and its perils, including its dependence on unrestrained data collection and exploitation. What can history possibly bring to this contemporary issue? Historian Sarah Igo suggests that what we are experiencing regarding AI’s threats to privacy and security is not new.
The origin point of many of our modern debates can, in fact, be found in the late nineteenth century, when the exposure, capture, surveillance, interception, transmission, and commodification of ‘private’ matters first erupted in U.S. political culture. A working knowledge of the past can equip us to think proactively about the consequences of today’s new technologies while also shedding light on the broader forces reworking social relations in modern publics.
Join us Wednesday to learn more. Pizza and drinks provided.

Supporting Pathways to Research Use
Faculty conducting research with real-world applications often encounter challenges in translating their work from academic settings into applications beyond the university context. Vanderbilt’s Innovation Ambassadors Program, run by the Center for Technology Transfer and Commercialization (CTTC), connects faculty innovators with peers who can offer informal early guidance on pathways to adoption and link them to key resources and relevant expertise, so they can get oriented without having to start from scratch.
| |
LIVE faculty interested in exploring pathways to bring an innovation into broader use and adoption can reach out to Innovation Ambassadors James Wiemer (CCC), Alyssa Wise (Peabody), or Chris Vanags (Peabody).

| New GenAI Writing Competition Theme
Join the Peabody Library each month for an exciting new challenge that brings together creativity and cutting-edge technology by inviting students to co-create short writing pieces using generative AI tools like Gemini, Amplify, ChatGPT, and Claude.
This month's challenge is March Metamorphosis that invites students to write a short story about a technology that changes the world in an unexpected way, practically, socially or morally.
| |
Collaborate with your favorite AI writing tools to craft your piece, then submit your work by March 27, 2026. Winning submissions (based on both judges and student's selections) will receive prizes!
