University Ministry: Remembrance
| |
As we enter the month of November, we remember all those who have gone before us to their eternal rest. In the Catholic tradition, the month of November is dedicated to remembering and celebrating the lives of family and friends who are no longer with us.
We hold in our hearts the memory of all who have gone before us, including members of our USF community. We also hold in our hearts those who, in the past year, have lost their lives through war and natural disasters, those who have died while seeking refuge in new homelands, and those who we have lost as a result of violence.
In this season of remembrance and gratitude, we are grateful for the lives that have nourished our own and the love that endures beyond death. If you would like for us to pray for your dearly departed during the month of November, at our student liturgies, please email their names to University Ministry. May the memory of all those who have passed be a blessing and light in our lives.
We are also grateful for new additions to our University Ministry family! Reverend Ronné Wingate Sims DMin has joined our team as our new assistant director for Religious Diversity, Justice, and Outreach. Rev. Sims is an ordained Baptist minister, speaker, and meditation teacher. She is interested in the intersections of mental health and spirituality, especially among communities of color. Sarah Manzano, a proud USF alumna, joins us as office manager. Sarah is an experienced campus minister and liturgist who was previously at Mercy High School San Francisco and St. Paul of the Shipwreck. She is happy to be back at the Hilltop. We also welcome Kique Bazan back as a full-time staff member of University Ministry. Kique had previously split his time between University Ministry and the Center for Global Education. Kique is looking forward to spearheading more Ignatian-centered immersion opportunities for our students.
We stand in gratitude for what has been, for what is, and for what will be. Join us this month at one of our programs or at one of our many collaborations with campus partners.

Part bedtime story, poem, and journal, and coupled with highly evocative illustrations, Malkah’s Notebook (2022) is a graphic novel about and love letter to the
Hebrew alphabet. The profound illustrated book tells the story of the relationship between young Malkah and her father, who tries to teach her to read the Torah. But with each piece of learning, Malkah’s questions multiply. Within the very first line of the book of Genesis, she discovers a secret story of creation, which opens a door to life’s greatest mysteries. Her journey takes her through Jewish mystical texts, far-off places,
archaeological digs, ancient gods, and ultimately into the nature of existence itself. The author and creator of this groundbreaking graphic novel, Mira Amiras PhD, will discuss her process in creating this extraordinary graphic novel, as well as her subsequent film, The Day Before Creation.
