"Sitting at the Intersection:
An Interdisciplinary View
on Data Science"
We're excited to host the first installment of our Fall 2024 Industry Seminar series, where we invite statisticians and data scientists working in industry to discuss their experiences. Learn about our upcoming
speaker below:
Lorin Crawford, PhD, along with being a principal researcher at Microsoft Research, holds an affiliate faculty position at Brown University. His lab develops machine learning algorithms and statistical tools to understand how non-additive variation plays a role i complex traits and contributes to disease in diverse human populations. Some of hi most recent work has landed me a place on Forbes 30 Under 30 list and recognition as a member of The Root 100 Most Influential
African Americans. He has also bee awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, a David & Lucile Packard Foundatio Fellowship for Science and Engineering, and a COPSS Emerging Leader Award Prior to joining both MSR
and Brown, Dr. Crawford received his PhD from the Department of Statistical Science at Duke University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics
from Clark Atlanta University.
Abstract: The goal of this talk is to broadly explore how my career has been shaped by the scale and scope of interdisciplinary teams and collaborations. My research group combine theoretical tools from seemingly disparate fields to generate practical solutions for problems in biology and health. Here, I will highlight two of our recent efforts where we (1) use machine learning (ML) to understand how non-additive genetic variation affect the architecture of complex human traits and (2) use artificial intelligence (AI) to discover drivers of cell state and drug
response in cancer.
