Meet the FLC Alumni Engagement Team


Director Ryan Lazo graduated from FLC in 2013, double-majoring in Environmental Studies and Anthropology. He joined the office in September 2021. He is excited to bring his student engagement and community development background to the role. Ryan lived in the Northwest until recently and could not be more excited to be back in Durango. The Alumni Scholarship received 69 applicants for the Fall 2022 semester. The scholarship is open to any child or grandchild of an FLC alum who carries a 2.7 cumulative GPA. Scholarships typically range from $500 - $1,000. You can support this scholarship by clicking the button below.

Native American Alumni Chapter (NAAC)


On Saturday, April 2, the NAAC hosted an alumni breakfast during the Hozhoni Days Powwow. This was the first time the event was held since 2019 and the turnout for both events was fantastic. You can view photos from those events here. Thank you to Clyde Benally for capturing such beautiful moments. Also, a big thank you to our volunteers and guest speakers - you truly helped make the event a success!

Fort Lewis College Alumni Greg Cairns (Humanities-English Concentration, '13) talks all about the guide life in his new autobiographical film, I’m A River Guide. Check it out here!

Fabian Martinez '18

Journalist Fabian Martinez (History '18) was honored with third place for Best Feature Story in the 2021 National Native Media Awards from the Native American Journalist Association for his article detailing the history and repair of the La Boca bridge. Martinez researched the history of the steel railroad bridge in The Southern Ute Drum’s archive and talked with elders who lived during that era.

Current Volunteer opportunities include
  • Homecoming 2022: Tabling opportunities throughout the weekend (October 17-23)
  • Collegiate MTB National Champs: Cheer on the team while tabling at Purg. (October 13-16)
  • Host an FLC trail day volunteer event on National Public Lands Day on 9/24
HUGE shoutout to the nearly 200 FLC alumni that signed up to be interviewed by Composition 254 students this semester!
