Presidential Speaker Series begins this month |
PSU President Ann Cudd’s Presidential Speaker Series, announced on her blog, aims to explore practices and ideas that will help PSU become our region’s model majority BIPOC institution. The series features conversations with university presidents of Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) around the country. The first speaker is Dr. Anjélica Garcia, president and superintendent of Santa Rosa Junior College, a Hispanic Serving Institution in Sonoma County, California, on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the Smith Memorial Student Union ballroom.

Library Dean search advances to three finalists
|
Interim Provost Shelly Chabon has announced on-campus visits for three finalists for the Library Dean. Each Finalist will respond to the following Open Forum question: What are three to five current challenges and/or opportunities facing urban serving academic libraries? A Q&A from the audience will follow each presentation.

Finalist A: Tuesday, Jan. 16 from 1 - 2 p.m.
- Finalist B: Wednesday, Jan. 18 from 2 - 3 p.m.
- Finalist C: Monday, Jan. 22 from 1 - 2 p.m.

All candidate forums will be held in person at the Millar Library, Room ML 160. CVs and feedback forms will be posted on the Library Dean search webpage a day ahead of each forum.

Nominations open for PSU Excellence Awards
|
Now is the time to nominate your colleagues for their outstanding accomplishments here at Portland State University. Academic Affairs is seeking nominations for the 2024 Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards to recognize individuals who have achieved outstanding scholarship and accomplishments at Portland State University. Deadline to submit a cover page is Friday, Jan. 26, with the completed nominations due by Friday, Feb. 9.

Apply to raise funds with the PSU Foundation
|
The PSU Spring Day of Giving is April 17-18, and the PSU Foundation is accepting participation applications. This annual campaign is an excellent opportunity to build awareness and raise support for your unit's fundraising priorities. If your team can coordinate communication outreach efforts and reach a reasonable fundraising goal, you're invited to fill out an application. Registration closes Friday, Feb. 2; join today!

REMINDER: Tracking initiation of attendance
|
Instructors are required to record initiation of attendance for each student registered in their classes in order to comply with federal Title IV regulations. Initiation of attendance must be recorded in the Class List & Initiation of Attendance link in Banweb by the end of the second week of the term. Students you have not reported as initiating attendance in the first two weeks may be required to return a portion of their financial aid. Review the Faculty Guide to Initiation of Attendance to learn what constitutes initiation of attendance and how to satisfy the requirement.

Send students to Welcome Week for support
|
Today and tomorrow, Advising & Career Services, the Office of Student Success, the Learning Center, and other academic service units will be tabling in two locations on campus (Fariborz Maseeh Hall and outside of Cramer Hall) to help students navigate PSU. Academic Advising will also be available for drop-ins on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 8 & 9 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. for each Pathway.

This winter, send students to the Learning Center
|
The start of the term is here! Set your students up for success by letting them know they can meet with an academic coach or peer tutor from the Learning Center to set goals and discuss study strategies. Learning Center services are free and open to all students. Faculty and staff can also submit a request for our ROADS to Success presentation series on topics such as motivation, time management, and study strategies to be presented in your classes.

After a delay, FAFSA application is open
|
Faculty and staff should be aware that, after a delay of several months, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is now available to submit for the 2024-2025 Academic Year. PSU Financial Aid is encouraging students to submit the FAFSA by February 1 to avoid delays in the process.

Opportunity to help improve student mental health support in Oregon
|
The HECC is seeking applicants to become part of a statewide effort to enhance mental health support for marginalized students. Three new team members are sought from public and private universities in Oregon to develop and implement collaborative strategies and solutions for student mental health in higher education. Apply by Jan. 16 for a $500 stipend. Higher ed professionals of color and/or from historically marginalized communities are encouraged. Questions? Contact Sarah Spafford at sspaffo2@uoregon.edu.
