SAVE THE DATE! 2023 Fall Budget forum is Nov. 7

What is the current state of the university's budget deficit? How can you be part of PSU's budgeting process? These questions and more will be answered at the 2023 Fall Budget Forum on Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 3 - 5 p.m. in the Ballroom on the third floor of Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU). PSU hires its first Tribal Liaison

Modesta Minthorn will join PSU in November as the university's first Executive Director of Tribal Relations, a new role that will maximize opportunities for engagement with regional tribes and lend support to PSU's Indigenous students. Minthorn is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation and a descendant of the Wallowa Band of Nez Perces.

President Ann Cudd's message about Indigenous Peoples' Day

PSU President Ann Cudd recently launched a blog on her website where she will periodically post about important issues that impact the PSU community and highlight some of her activities as PSU's president. Today, President Cudd has a new post about Indigenous Peoples' Day and the appointment of Modesta Minthorn as a Tribal Liaison. On the blog, she has also shared her goals for this academic year.

Search launches for PSU Library Dean

The search is underway for the next dean of the PSU Library. Position profile and application instructions are now available online. Filling vacant dean positions is one of the top priorities that PSU President Ann Cudd listed during her Convocation speech last month.

Conversations with the Chief on Wednesdays

Campus Police Chief Willie Halliburton extends an open invitation to students and employees to join him for weekly “Conversations with the Chief” on Wednesdays from 12 to 12:45 p.m. at Smith Memorial Student Union (SMSU) in Parkway North (Room 101) on the first floor across from the cafeteria.

New Learning Center resource is available to employees, too!

The Learning Center has a new resource available: StudentLingo. This is a series of online workshops available to all PSU students, faculty, and staff for free that cover a variety of topics, such as financial literacy, stress management, goal setting and more.

Attend PSUF Go Viks! Night

Gather a group of colleagues and cheer for the PSU volleyball team! The Portland State Foundation is hosting a faculty and staff night on Saturday, Oct. 14 when the Viks take on the Weber State Wildcats in the Viking Pavilion at 7 p.m. This event is open to PSU/F employees and their guests — tickets can be purchased for $6 each!

News Briefs and Announcements

Student Success launched a text bot called Victor E. Bot to all PSU students via their mobile phones. The text bot provides 24/7 support for students.
The Employee Access, Success and Equity (EASE) task force invites everyone to complete trauma-informed online training as part of PSU’s Time to Act initiative.
Nominate a colleague for one of PSU’s annual Research Awards, via Research & Graduate Studies. Name-only nominations are due Tuesday, Oct. 24. Nominations must be completed by Monday, Nov. 6.

Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science Dean Joseph Bull talked with KOIN about the university’s efforts to engage Indigenous students in STEM; Alan DeLaTorre, an adjunct professor of urban affairs, spoke with OPB about ways the city can become more friendly for its aging population; and Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Mark Leymon helped KATU understand that a tougher criminal justice system doesn’t lead to reductions in crime.
