Picture of the Week

Congratulations to Kourtney Kinchen '17 (pictured above with Freezell Brown, Director of Diversity and Inclusion) on being crowned Miss Circle City Classic this past Saturday! The coronation took place at the Madame Walker Theater Center in Indianapolis, where Kourtney both received the crown, and a $5000 college scholarship in honor of her achievements.
The Miss Circle City Classic Coronation is a ceremony held by The Circle City Classic in an effort to celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding young women in the Indianapolis African American community.  Thirty students from thirteen area high schools competed this year. To earn the crown, Kourtney attended workshops over an eight-week period on Saturdays and Sundays where she practiced her skills in leadership, teamwork, public speaking, self-confidence, and even modern dance.
“I didn’t do this to be Queen,” said Kourtney. “I was inspired to apply for the Miss Circle City Classic after I spoke to last year’s winner. She said the program really helped her grow. I found this to be true for myself, as I was continually being stretched and finding myself in a number of difficult situations that turned into opportunities and risks I wouldn’t otherwise have taken.”
Kourtney adds: “I believe in advancing issues in the African American community and in being involved. All the experiences I had in this program really provided me with a way to continue expanding my openness for growth.”
Below, where for more than a couple years we have featured our Student Spotlight, you will find Mr. Larry Lenne. We thought it would be fun to do a spotlight every once in awhile on those dedicated men and women who give their time and talents to Brebeuf everyday in the formation of our students. Throughout the rest of this school year, we will continue to mix it up and spotlight a faculty or staff member every once in a while and hope you find them both enjoyable and informative.  Special thank you to Mr. Lenne as well for agreeing to be first!
We will return to our originally scheduled program next week of spotlighting another remarkable student.

Faculty Spotlight

MR. LARRY LENNE
What's your favorite thing about the role you play at Brebeuf?
I like teaching freshman and senior classes. It’s nice to see how the students have grown over the four years. I have also enjoyed the flexibility to participate in the retreat and service day programs.
What surprised you most about your first year at Brebeuf?
I was surprised by how motivated my students were to learn. I was taken aback that they would give up free time to meet with me during a PRT.
How many years have you been at Brebeuf and in what capacities?
I’m starting my 12th year as a math teacher at Brebeuf. I have taught all grades, but currently don’t have any sophomore classes.
What makes Brebeuf different from other area high schools?
At Brebeuf everyone seems to get along with one another. I can’t recall witnessing any fights or major disagreements in all the time I’ve been here.
Describe a memorable moment from your time at Brebeuf.
The retreats and service days are always memorable. It’s amazing to see the students opening up and sharing with me, their math teacher. It was also great fun being the culprit in the CSI event one year.
If one of your friends was considering sending their child to Brebeuf, what would you tell them?
I would tell them that it’s a great place that will challenge and love their child.
What's something that challenges you, and how do you navigate that challenge?
Whenever a concept or problem challenges me, I simply ask a colleague for advice. It works everytime.
Who inspires you?
The other math teachers at Brebeuf. I like that we have department centers. I hear and see them interacting with students and am inspired to be the best teacher I can be.
What do you like to do in your spare time, when not working at Brebeuf?
I like to ride one of my bicycles in my spare time. I rode over 9000 miles in 2015 and took a 500-mile bike camping trip around Michigan this past summer. I also started racing with Team Heroes in 2016.  I’m proud to be a part of the Heroes because they provide meaningful support to cancer patients, education to promote cancer prevention and resources to advance research for a cure.
Tell us something about you that most people don’t know…
I had curly hair as a freshman in high school.
We asked Madeleine Watson '17 - "What makes Mr. Lenne a great teacher?"
Madeleine's response: I had Mr. Lenne for two years and I liked how he was always excited to teach when he came to class. He always encouraged us to ask questions and to go see him if we needed help. Mr. Lenne was always helpful and patient when we were confused. I also really enjoyed how he made his notes short and clear, because it gave us time in class to get ahead on the homework and ask questions if we needed help.

Adjustment to Gaining the Alternative PE Credit

Brebeuf Jesuit has made an adjustment to the current Alternative PE process, in hopes of streamlining the communication across all seasons.
Going forward, students must report to the Athletic Department at the conclusion of their season to inform the Athletic Department of their intention to receive the credit. The Athletic Department will check their records to see if the student has completed the requirements for that season. If the student has completed the requirements, the Athletic Department will forward that student’s name to have the credit placed on the student’s transcript.
There will no longer be a need to register prior to a certain deadline to receive the credit. Students who have already registered still must inform the Athletic Department about their intention to receive the credit once the season is over.
If you have any questions, please contact jweinstein@brebeuf.org.

Freshman Service Days for the Fall

We will begin accepting permission forms for the Class of 2020 Freshman Service Days this week!  Freshman Service Days are completely voluntary and do not count towards the Community Service credit at Brebeuf.  They are offered each year to the incoming freshmen to help introduce them to the part of Brebeuf Jesuit's mission of being men and women for others, and it is our hope that it will start them on a path of service beginning before and going far beyond the hours which they are required to complete during their junior and senior years.  This is also a great opportunity for freshmen to get to know more of their classmates outside of the classroom.
Freshmen can participate in one or all of the Freshman Service Days as space allows.  Class absences will be excused as long as permission slips are turned in 1 week prior to the trip.

If you have any questions, please contact Nick Klingler at nklingler@brebeuf.org, or 317.524.7005.

All freshmen will report to the Auditorium no later than 8:15 a.m. for a special performance by the A.C.T. Out Ensemble. The A.C.T. Out Ensemble is a social issue theatre troupe, performing original work based on social, health, and educational issues. The A.C.T. Out Ensemble will be followed by a freshman community service activity which will take place here at Brebeuf from 9:45-10:45 a.m. The day will conclude with an alumni speaker from 11:00-11:30 a.m., and at the conclusion, students will be dismissed. Please note that students must be picked up outside of the gymnasium in order not to disrupt the PSAT. We are excited to welcome the A.C.T. #BrebeufDrives Begin Next Week

Brebeuf Jesuit is renewing our community-wide effort, #BrebeufDrives, a quarterly program centered around uniting Brebeuf in giving and modeling service for the vulnerable and underserved populations of Indianapolis. These quarterly drives provide a great opportunity for our school community to actively be men and women for others.
Between September 26 and October19 #BrebeufDrives’ first collection will benefit the Dayspring Center for Homeless Families. The Dayspring Center indicated several needs that our drive can help fulfill: Soap/shower gel, shampoo, deodorant, and new washcloths/towels. These much-needed items can be dropped off in the collection boxes located in the Gym Lobby and Front Lobby.  Items may also be left in Nick Klingler's office located next to the chapel.
The focus of November's #BrebeufDrive will be to assist with the collection of items benefitting the Crisis Office for Brebeuf's annual tradition of Help for the Holidays. In the months to follow, further communications from Brebeuf will let families know the focus of the #BrebeufDrives on a quarterly basis.
Any interested parents wishing to assist with these drives in our school community may contact Nick Klingler in Community Service at nklingler@brebeuf.org or Debra Parker at debrabparker@gmail.com.

First Diversity Dialogue for 2016-2017: The State of Civil Discourse

Next week, Brebeuf Jesuit will have its first diversity dialogue for this school year on Wednesday, September 28 from 10:10-11:10 a.m. (Period 3) in the Auditorium.  For those new to Brebeuf, Diversity Dialogues are quarterly discussion forums on topics that have a connection to diversity within the school, city, nation, and beyond.  The dialogues provide a space students and others in our school community can grow in their awareness of diversity and practice engaging around topics—sometimes, controversial ones—in an authentic, respectful manner.

The upcoming dialogue will focus on the question of whether we have become so polarized as a nation that civil discourse is no longer possible.  The discussion will be facilitated by Mr. Charlie Wiles, Director for the Center for Interfaith Cooperation here in Indianapolis, and two presenters from the board of directors for that organization will help to jumpstart the discussion.  It should be a meaningful one, and all are welcome to attend.

If you have questions about the event, please contact Freezell Brown, Director of Diversity and Inclusion
