Match Day 2024

Maybe the most exciting day of the year is Match Day. Our fourth-year students find out where they will spend their years in residency and attend Vanderbilt's match day ceremony to announce their accomplishment to their classmates. Each student chooses music, makes a collage of medical school memories and invites their loved ones on stage to acknowledge the huge accomplishment of finishing medical school and stepping into the next chapter. The Medical Innovator's Development Program would like to express our congratulation to four M4 students and wish them well as they move on to impressive residencies across the country. Hosted by Deans Amy Fleming and Donald Brady, the day is a true celebration of life after medical school.

Eden Maloney matched to the dermatology residency program at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She will be completing her transition year at HCA/Tri-Star Nashville with VUMS MIDP graduates Noah Thompson Orfield and Emma Neal. Noah Thompson Orfield will be entering a diagnostic radiology program at the University of Virginia. The MIDP is delighted that Emma Neal has accepted a residency in diagnostic radiology here at Vanderbilt. Sarah Ouadah will be moving to San Diego for her transitional year at Scripps Mercy Hospital and staying there to complete her residency in Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego Medical Center. We wish all of our graduates the very brightest futures.

Spring Forum Speakers

Forum season was particularly exciting this spring. As is our tradition our fourth year students took forum time to speak about their residency application process and their work in Industry Immersion. We also had 5 remarkable speakers from Vanderbilt Medical Center and beyond. The first of these speakers was Colleen O'Connor, PhD. After many years at Duke University, Dr. O'Connor accepted a position as the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Affairs at the new Alice L. Walton School of Medicine. Her presentation about building a new medical school and creating a new curriculum that fits into the landscape and culture of Bentonville, Arkansas was truly incredible.

Bryan Marascalchi, MD, an anesthesiologist with Vanderbilt Medical Center gave an incredible talk detailing how to get a new product off the ground. With an expert knowledge of patents, clinical trials and looking for gaps of obvious need, showed our students the possibilities of invention while working as a full time physician.

Keith Obstein MD, MPH spoke to our students about his work with new technologies in gastroenterology. His innovation has been funded by the Department of Defense Center for Integration of Medicine and Innovative Technology. His work with Capsule Robots and Image Guided Technology is changing the work and perspective of the traditional colonoscopy.

Finally, the MIDP had a great conversation with Ellis Aune and Pieter Wijffels, two team members from the European investment firm called NLC. Their remarkable work involves accelerating early stage projects by providing expertise and capital to help get innovations in health care off the ground. One of the questions often asked around innovation is "where is the money to get it off the ground". The work of NLC, shed light on this question as well as connected our students with a firm that they can look to for advice and funding in the future.

Associate Director of the MIDP, Dr. Trent Rosenbloom, caught an unbelievable picture of the most recent eclipse on April 8th. Though it was an overcast day in Nashville and the eclipse was hard to see, count on Dr. Rosenbloom to find the shot!
