Submarine Technology Symposium at APL Prepares for Today’s Undersea Competition

Co-sponsored by Commander, Submarine Forces, and the Naval Submarine League and hosted by APL, the 36th annual Submarine Technology Symposium explored how technology developers are reacting to the evolving state of undersea and seabed warfare. Many speakers cited how, during the next few years and decades, the trilateral security agreement between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States — known as AUKUS — will counter the aggressive growth of undersea capabilities among adversaries.

DYNAMIC targets the lower thermosphere ionosphere (LTI) altitude region where the thermosphere’s neutral gas interacts with the coexisting plasma population of the ionosphere, influenced by forcing from above and below. Poorly understood multiscale ripples in this area, as depicted in the gray-scale ground track, are a result of atmospheric wave forcing from below.

APL, University of Colorado Boulder Advance in NASA Space Weather Proposal Opportunity

A multi-institutional team including APL and the University of Colorado Boulder is one of three concept teams chosen by NASA competing to develop Phase-A proposals to study space weather and how it links to Earth’s atmosphere.
