Thank you to all in our Mason Science Community for a productive and impactful year. There is no greater demonstration of your impact than watching our students graduate and many of you will take time to join us tomorrow to do just that. After grades are in, be sure to use the coming break as a time to rest and spend time with others until we see each other in the new year.

This winter graduate is leaving a legacy of community by Sarah Holland
From the moment Jason Mercado, a biology major in the College of Science and a member of the Honors College, came to George Mason University as part of the Student Transition Empowerment Program (STEP), he embraced all the possibilities of campus involvement. From being an orientation leader to working as an environmental field interpreter for school programs, Mercado made the most of his time at Mason. He’s graduating this week with his eyes toward a healthier future for all. Photo provided.

#FacultyFriday highlights School of Systems Biology professor
This past #FacultyFriday featured Yuntao Wu, Professor, School of Systems Biology. He has studied viruses for more than 30 years, and for the past 20 years, he has been primarily focused on studying HIV infection. Specifically, HIV preintegration transcription, virus-host interaction, and virus-mediated signal transduction in the infection of blood CD4 T cells and macrophages. He is also developing and testing an HIV Rev-dependent vector to target viral reservoirs for a functional cure of HIV infection. View original Instagram post.

At a recent Faculty Senate Meeting, a motion was passed to change the start day for the Fall 2024 semester by pushing it back a week (from August 19 to August 26). Drone masterclass helps students explore real-world problems for first responders by Sarah Holland
The masterclass, hosted by the Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX), is an eight-week program that meets every Thursday evening throughout October and November. This year, participants heard from a number of experts including those within the College of Science. While learning the nuances of drone building and piloting, students heard from Steve Burmeister of Mason’s Forensic Science Program on emergency preparedness, and Kerin Hilker-Balkissoon, the director of educational and career pathways in the College of Science, on microcredentialing. 2023 ORIEI Seed Funding Awards announced
There was an overwhelming response to the call for proposals for 2023 ORIEI Seed Funding, receiving 51 applications (34 Building the Foundation and 17 Take It to the Next Level) which were externally reviewed by more than 60 reviewers. A total of nine applications were selected for funding including (1) Computational Simulations of Human Habitats in Space, PI: Anamaria Berea, Computational and Data Sciences and (2) Influence of Internalized Racism on Maternal Mental Health and Infant Health Outcomes in Washington, DC, Virginia Espina, School of Systems Biology.

In a recent segment on CNN, Hakeem Oluseyi, a research professor in physics and astronomy, discusses a new study about the dust from the asteroid that hit Earth and killed the dinosaurs. Oluseyi starts at the 47 second mark.

Verify your information for upcoming 2023 Form W-2
As human resources prepares to issue your 2023 Form W-2 in the new year, they would like to remind you to verify your permanent mailing address in Patriot Web. It is important that your permanent mailing address is reflected accurately on your W-2 and in Patriot Web for any future correspondence. Your W-2 will be available in Patriot Web on or before January 31, 2024.
How to View and Update Your Address in Patriot Web:- To view your permanent mailing address on file, log in to Patriot Web, then select Employee Services → Employee Dashboard → My Profile.
- To update your permanent mailing address on file in the Patriot Web Employee Dashboard, select the pencil icon next to the information you wish to update.

Mason appoints Dean of University Libraries and University Librarian
After a comprehensive review process led by a committee comprised of faculty, staff, and administrators from both the University Libraries and across Mason, Anne Osterman has been appointed to a five-year term as dean of the University Libraries and University librarian.
Dean Osterman was appointed as interim dean of the University Libraries and university librarian on December 1, 2022. During her time in this role, the University Libraries have grown the Open Access publishing options for Mason authors to include three additional major publishers, started a new comprehensive program of outreach about the libraries’ collections, and hosted a university-wide series of sessions about generative artificial intelligence.

Deadline to submit nominations for Faculty Excellence Awards January 30, 2024 | 11:59 p.m. Nominations for the Presidential Awards for Faculty Excellence—which recognize, promote, and honor outstanding members of the Mason community for excellence in teaching, research, social impact, diversity, and inclusion—have been extended and are now due Tuesday, January 30.
