UMKC - University of Missouri-Kansas City
May 18, 2020
To Our Campus Community:

The time has come for us to prepare in earnest to return to campus. We look forward to the day we will all be back on campus together!

The Roos Return Plan calls for a three-phase approach, with a start date of June 1.

Here’s a broad overview:

Phase 1 (June 1-July 5) – Critical Operations Approved by Campus Leadership
This includes employees engaged in critical operations that support the university’s core mission and who must be physically present to effectively complete their work duties. This may include some areas of research and clinical services, for example.

Phase 2 (July 6-August 2) – Expanded Operations with Ongoing Restrictions Approved by Campus Leadership
A second wave of employees and departmental leaders will return, especially senior administration and divisions heavily engaged in student services and academic roles preparing for the fall semester.

Phase 3 (August 3-August 24) – Return to Full On-Site Operations with Ongoing Restrictions
The rest of campus returns in time for the fall session.

Because we cannot be certain of the public health, economic and regulatory environment that we will encounter at each stage, this plan should be considered preliminary. It is likely that some steps, timelines and requirements listed in the plan will need to change in response to changing conditions. The plan will be posted on our Roos Return page and updated frequently. While the plan may need to be altered more than once, our fundamental commitment remains firm: to provide a safe and healthy environment for all members of our community.

That commitment will also require us to make some changes in our routines once we return, outlined in the updated HR 700 policies. We each must take responsibility for keeping ourselves and our fellow Roos safe as we return to campus.

The policy includes guidelines encouraging people to wear face coverings on campus, taking temperatures daily and maintaining social distancing procedures, which will require reconfiguration of some workspaces. We will be working on these procedures in coming weeks.

UMKC will continue to be guided by requirements and recommendations from local, state and federal authorities.

I also want to give my thanks to our campus Coronavirus Planning Team that has been meeting frequently to guide our efforts.  If you have any questions or ideas, please send them to the team via umkcfeedback@umkc.com.

Our university is one of the essential foundation stones of our greater Kansas City community, and we will continue to be team players in the overall effort to both reduce the impact of the virus and rebuild and restore our economy and our society.

We are truly in this together.

Sincerely,

C. Mauli Agrawal, Ph.D.          Jenny Lundgren, Ph.D.
