Brian Mark Artist’s Statement
Nature is raw. Art is practiced.
Each stone has its own language and I work to understand that language. Some of the learning comes from striving to listen to what each stone is saying. Each has a color, a shape, and a hidden beauty. While valuing that uniqueness, I strive to let my imagination fly free, in order build upon nature’s creation: blending raw nature with understanding the language of this stone. And so begins the conversation between stone and sculptor.
When a stone selects me, I cannot know what striations, hues, density, faults, lie under the surface. As I begin chiseling and grinding, the stone talks to me, saying, “I have this special colored line running through me: preserve it.” Or, “slightly shift the angle of this or that curve.” Or, “work with me: together we can bring forth that special surprise, that new beauty never before seen.” The conversation continues until nature’s stone and my imagination marry and together say, “stop – our work is done.”
For me that conversation must lead to a sculpture that has movement, movement, movement. That movement is stone brought to life in a way never before seen.

Exhibition News
Here’s the latest from the Exhibition Committee.
It’s here…that is the 95th Annual Juried Exhibition. The 95th Annual Take-in has been quite successful. At the time of this writing, a few hours befors closing, there are 28 members submitting 90 artworks for consideration by the juror Kim Abeles. The Exhibition Committee is really pleased with the number of members that want to participate in this groundbreaking dual exhibition, featuring a traditional gallery exhibition at White’s Fine Art Gallery in Montrose and concurrently an online exhibition at ISSUU and the PSA website. Both exhibitions open Saturday, November 7 and close Saturday, December 5, 2020. White’s Fine Art Gallery will be open for viewing the artworks Tuesday thru Saturday 9am to 5pm. Plan to visit the gallery with your friends and family. Thanks to all participating members for supporting this important event.
The next proposed online exhibition is for watercolor and gouache artwork. This exhbition is open to all PSA members, so why not try out watercolor or gouache if these are not your primary media? More information and a Call For Entries will be forthcoming soon.
The October exhibition at the Pasadena Central Libray has been canceled by the library due to the pandemic. PSA will apply again next year for an October 2021 exhibition.
Both short-term and long-term volunteers are always needed for the Exhibition Committee. Open positions include the Exhibition Committee Chair and individual Exhibition Chairs. If you are interested, please send an email to: Exhibitions@PasadenaSocietyofArtists.org

Holiday Campaign
Art Supplies for Kids
Hi everyone,
It’s time to start thinking about your all- important donations to Art Supplies for Kids for the holidays. Again this year PSA is asking for donations of new art supplies for children of all ages. We are talking about the foster children in the care of Homes of Hope Foster Care Agency in West Covina. The children need coloring books, crayons, watercolor sets, sketch books, acrylic paint sets, colored pencils, and any other art supplies. All art supplies will be distributed by Homes of Hope directly to the children.
You can help out by purchasing and donating art supplies or send a donation to PSA. Your donation can be a check, a gift certificate from an art store or use the PayPal button at the PSA website. You can find the PayPal button in the “Get Involved" page at the PSA website. Visit PasadenaSocietyofArtists.org . All proceeds will be used to purchase art supplies. If sending a check, please indicate it is a donation to Art Supplies for Kids.

LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS, IDEAS & CONTENT FOR PSA VIDEOS
Faced with the unparalleled challenges of hosting exhibitions during the pandemic, PSA embraced the 21st century with our inaugural digital exhibition “PSA Virtual Version 7.20.20” and its companion Exhibition Catalog.
We all miss our meetings and the inspiring and educational programs. So, let’s continue our adventure into the 21st Century and create and post short art-technique and how-to videos on our website.
Do you already have an art-technique video you’d like to share?
Do you have an idea for a video you would like to create, but don’t have the technical skills to shoot and edit?
Do you have experience shooting and editing short videos?
We are all talented artists and have a lot to share.
For example, how does Vic chisel and grind the stone to make his beautiful sculptures?
How do I work in hot, melted encaustic (wax)?
How does Rebecca create her prints?
What is Debbi’s technique for creating her layered photography and scanography?
How does Larry arrange a lighting set-up for photographing art works?
What would YOU like to share with the group?
What would YOU like to see?
If we have enough interest, ideas and volunteers, we will start a new committee to create these videos to share with the PSA community.

Dear PSA Members,
Our board meeting was delayed twice because of the fires and heat, but we finally met September 26th.
I am concerned that no one has YET stepped up to accept a nomination for PSA President. I have had the role for 6.5 years and it is time for someone new to take over. I appreciate some of you asking me to stay on; however, during this quieter time of events, a new president can get started easier. I will, however, stay on as Immediate Past President according to the Bylaws.
The restrictions created by the pandemic put a hold on plans, so the annual membership meeting and election of officers will be announced when we can make a decision.
The board wants to keep PSA alive and well in the best possible ways until we can have regular meetings, exhibits and other events. Your ideas as to what we can do are welcome.
Our new Members At Large have been selected to assist the board with expanded communications and for members to have greater access to address concerns of events and organization. Liz Crimzon and Art Carrillo have been chosen for 2021 to serve on the board.
I wish you all the very best. My best to your art, your family and your friends. Like everyone else, I am tired of this shutdown, but we artists are creative enough to make the best of our days.
Stay well and stay creative. Be mindful and playful in your work!!

BOARD MEETING SUMMARY
1. Elections will be held at the discretion of the Board.
2. Danny Mattijetz has stepped down as our Secretary, having completed the final two years of Jackie Steimke’s term.
3. Rhonda Raulston was appointed as interim Secretary until the election. Rhonda has also been nominated for this position.
4. New exhibits are coming up. See the news for the 95th Annual Juried Exhibition with the concurrent online exhibit, plus the new Watercolor and Gouache Online Exhibit.
5. The Exhibitions Committee will have an expanded leadership: Vice President of Exhibitions and a Co-Chair. New job descriptions will be forthcoming so that the new committee will continue to plan and manage fine exhibition opportunities for PSA with other committee members.
6. New Member Screening will take place through Smartsheets and a group of PSA jurors. Marion Dies and Leah Knecht are working on the specific details. If you know of artists who want to apply, have them apply through our website as before.
7. We would like to give the PSA Artist Profiles (on the website) a facelift, so that it appears more like a virtual gallery.
8. The next quarterly Board of Directors Meeting is scheduled for January 9, 2021.

Elections are taking place at the end of the year for the upcoming PSA Board. All positions are open. They include President, Executive Vice President, Vice President -- Exhibitions, Treasurer, and Secretary. Each position is a three-year term which begins in January 2021. Candidate nominations are encouraged.
