Football: Brentwood grinds out 14-12 win against Henry County
By Joe Williams • Sports Writer
BRENTWOOD – In an era of wide-open offenses and bulb-popping final scores, the Brentwood High School defeated Henry County Friday night 14-12 in a classic battle of smash-mouth football at James C. Parker Stadium.
The fact that both Bruins’ touchdowns came on passes was the only tribute to the aerial game that currently proliferates the game. The Patriots got theirs the old-fashioned way – hard-nosed running.
“I said before the game this was going to be a low scoring affair,” said a happy Clint Finch, Brentwood’s head coach, after his team improved to 3-1 overall.

Football: Brentwood’s Cochran provides big target as QB Nelson finds groove
By Charles Pulliam • Sports Editor
BRENTWOOD – It’s hard to miss Daniel Cochran whether he’s on the basketball court or football field.
The 6-foot-7 Brentwood High School junior was the backup Bruins quarterback last season. This year, he’s transitioned into a sure-hands tight end.
“I really wanted to help this team somehow,” said Cochran, who caught his first touchdown pass during Friday’s 14-12 win over Henry County. “Football is really fun and you know, I love being around these guys and I want to be that contributor even from a different position.”

Football: Oakland overcomes Ravenwood in high-octane clash
By David Dawson • Sports Writer
BRENTWOOD — It could be that Friday night’s high school football game between Ravenwood and Oakland was simply a preview of a postseason matchup to come.
If that is indeed the case, the sequel is going to have a lot to live up to.
The two teams put on a highly entertaining game Friday night, when Oakland registered a 45-31 victory over the host Raptors in front of a packed house and a local television audience.

Titans QB Tannehill has 'burning fire' after playoff loss last season
By TERESA M. WALKER • AP Pro Football Writer
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The questions came at Ryan Tannehill in a variety of ways Wednesday, with reporters trying to draw out any remaining emotion from the Tennessee Titans quarterback's last game.
The man starting his 11th NFL season on Sunday in the opener against the visiting New York Giants didn't bite.
Tannehill covered that in May when he revealed he needed therapy to deal with the Titans' divisional playoff loss, which featured his third interception, coming with 20 seconds left in a tied game. He also covered the same ground at the start of training camp.

Commentary: Brentwood Academy’s home football field turns 50
By Bill Traughber for the Williamson Herald
BRENTWOOD – Brentwood Academy’s football field hosted its first home game 50 years ago on Sept. 1, 1972. The Eagles’ football team was homeless during its first two years in 1970 and 1971, as all games were played on the opponents’ field or neutral sites.
Legendary head coach Carlton Flatt, who coached BA from 1970-1999 and again from 2002-2007, was entering his third season in the summer of 1972 continuing to assemble the foundation of a football program that would become one of the state’s finest for decades.
