Calling all future legal leaders! Four of KU's pre-law student organizations will be hosting their second annual Pre-Law Mix and Mingle on April 10th from 6 to 8 PM. The event will be hosted in Capitol Federal Hall Room 3056.

All KU students are invited to join and are encouraged to dress in business professional. This evening event is a great opportunity to connect with fellow pre-law students, campus organizations, and both KU Law and the Washburn University School of Law.

Pizza, beverages, and desserts are provided. No registration or RSVP is required to attend.

Starting in February 2025, Jayhawk Academic Advising will adjust its drop-in advising hours to Mondays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 4:00 PM. This change is based on student usage patterns of drop-in services and will apply to all Jayhawk Academic Advising programs, including:

Jayhawk Academic Advising (JAA) recognizes staff who make a positive impact on KU students with its Advisor of the Year award. All pre-law students are assigned both an academic major advisor and a pre-law advisor by JAA who provide support.

Jayhawk Academic Advising also includes the following initiative programs: Jayhawk Pre-Law Advising, Jayhawk Pre-Health Advising, and Jayhawk Exploratory Advising. All nominations must be received by midnight on Thursday, April 24, and a final recipient will be announced in May. You will be notified if your nominee is selected for the award. Encourage your classmates to help recognize their outstanding advisors!

Drake Law School will be visiting the KU Lawrence campus on Wednesday, April 23 from 10 to 11 AM in Summerfield Hall Room 201. Dean Roscoe Jones will talk about opportunities and scholarships at Drake Law School as well as legal career opportunities. Dean Jones has previously taught at Yale, Georgetown, and University of Michigan law schools, and he worked as an attorney for multiple federal bodies, including the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division.

Dean Jones is excited to talk with pre-law students about career paths and opportunities to pursue law school. KU students are welcome to come-and-go and are encouraged to stop by on the way to or after class. Interested students are requested but not required to RSVP.

Douglas County District Court Volunteer Opportunity

The Douglas County district court operates several volunteer programs. The district court's law library has an immediate need for student volunteers.

This position will allow you to experience helping attorneys and the public who visit the library, while at the same time allowing you independent work on your studies.

KU Law Jury Selection Course Needing Student Volunteer

KU Law is for volunteers to serve as jurors in our Jury Selection intersession course at the law school at the end of the semester. 3L law students will be learning and practicing jury selection skills throughout the week, culminating in a simulated jury selection exercise with actual jurors.

The commitment for volunteers is either from 10 am – 12:30 pm or 1:30 pm – 4 pm on Friday, May 16 in Green Hall. You will get to participate in four students’ process, and they ask questions to select a jury for a criminal trial. Volunteers do not need to prepare ahead of time.

You are invited to have lunch with us either before or after your session, and you can also take an optional tour of the law school if interested. We appreciate your enthusiasm and help to support our law students in their final law school class before graduation!

Scopes Trial at 100: Ed Larson Lecture on "A Century of Science, Religion, and Anti-Evolutionism in America"

Join historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Ed Larson for a community lecture on April 29 at 7:00 PM in The Jay room, Kansas Union. His lecture will explore the past century of the evolution debate in America, tracing the complex intersections of religion, science, anti-science, and the law. By outlining three distinct stages of antievolutionism, he will provide a historical framework for understanding how these debates continue to shape education, public policy, and the legal landscape today.

Fall & Summer Enrollment Information

As a pre-law student at KU, you are assigned both an academic and pre-law advisor. Each advisor provides unique support to your journey at KU. Don't hesitate to reach out to your academic advisor for help enrolling in classes and questions about graduation requirements. Some questions to ask your academic advisor about during your next advising appointment include:

April Pre-Law Tip: What about repeat classes and repeat professors? The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) will average all final grades into a cumulative GPA reported to law schools, so think carefully about repeating a course again. However, we always encourage taking another course with the same professor again. Having a couple of professors you have taken classes with can help you develop meaningful relationships with them. This can help when you need letters of recommendation for law school.
