A sad story, an update, and an addition will comprise Tuesday's Special Edition of Indiana RadioWatch.
Writing obituaries will go down as one of the toughest duties of writing IRW. It's no easier when we knew the broadcaster.
Terre Haute broadcaster Matt Luecking passed away. Just before Noon on Monday, someone contacted Terre Haute Police to check on Mr. Luecking. Police found Mr. Luecking dead in his bedroom. Monday evening, police arrested a 24 year old Terre Haute man, and he's now charged with murder.
For several years, Mr. Luecking worked weekends in Indianapolis (WZPL). Around Terre Haute, he programmed and appeared behind several Wabash Valley radio station microphones:
WCBH-FM (104.3fm, Casey, Illinois)
WMGI 100.7fm (Bright Tower)
WBOW-FM when those call letters were on 102.7fm (Crossroads Comunications)
Since April 2015, Mr. Luecking maintained a loyal audience at Emmis Communications' Hot AC/WFNB (92.7fm, Brazil). No word yet on funeral arrangements. Mr. Luecking was in his early 40s.
If you want to share remembrances, please e-mail me and I'll publish them in an upcoming IRW.
Here's an update from this morning: The Gabriel Project's Religious/WGPI (93.5fm, Columbus) turns in their FCC license for cancellation. WGPI reported to the FCC that they went silent on August 15 at 3:00pm, but several IRW readers tell us that WGPI never signed on the air.
Finally, this addition to our "This Week in Indiana Radio History": Since it's Tuesday October 25, on today's date in 1979, WNDU-FM (92.9fm, South Bend) launches with a CHR format, as "U93".
We'll be back on Thursday. Thank you for your continued support.
