Community Conversation: Permission to Say No

Clinicians and organizations serving people experiencing homelessness routinely step up to meet new challenges and find solutions where none currently exist. The COVID-19 pandemic in particular has presented opportunities for new partnerships and programs, often with urgent deadlines and time-limited funding.
While creativity and engagement are at the heart of what we do, continually saying “yes” to new endeavors can draw us away from what we do well and can lead to burnout. Saying “no” can also create space for new ideas and solutions to emerge. Join us for this informal discussion exploring the consequences of saying “yes” or “no” and how we might find healthy boundaries in the work we do, both individually and as organizations.
When: Monday, Jan. 30, at 1 p.m. CST

Council Welcomes New Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

NHCHC is proud to introduce Ms. Kevonya Elzia, MA, BS, RN, as our new Director of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI). Ms. Elzia has 18 years as a Registered Nurse and more than 20 years of experience in health care. Her work has focused on engaging individuals within the classroom, community, and organizational settings to see racial healing as integral to public health and personal well-being. Over the past 10 years, she has worked to develop curricula and tools to aid individuals and organizations in dismantling the systems and social practices that perpetuate cycles of internalized, interpersonal, and institutional oppression.
“Throughout my nursing career, I have focused on addressing the health inequities I have witnessed daily, first as a child and now as a professional,” Elzia says. “Over the last 10 years, my work for equity, diversity, and inclusion in healthcare has expanded to include directly addressing the intersecting systems that feed into the health disparities my patients experience.”
“We are excited to have Kevonya join our team,” says Darlene Jenkins, DrPH, Senior Director of Programs. “She brings passion and dedication to address the inequities and injustices that exist in our society, and we look forward to her applying her knowledge, experience, and expertise to expand our JEDI-focused initiatives.”
Ms. Elzia received her Master of Arts in Integrative Health from California Institute of Integral Studies, a Bachelor of Science in Human Services from Cambridge College, and an Associate of Science in Nursing from Minneapolis College and Technical College. Her appointment to this new position began Dec. 19.

CSH National Learning Collaborative: Understanding Non-Clinical and Case Management Staff Roles in Supporting Diabetes Prevention

Special and vulnerable populations, including those experiencing homelessness and housing instability, are disproportionately affected by diabetic complications due to a variety of environmental factors. Diabetes can be managed through a combination of physical activity, diet, and appropriate use of insulin and oral medications to lower blood sugar (glucose) levels. Community-based interventions that leverage both clinical and non-clinical strategies can meet people where they are, manage existing cases, engage patients in their care plans, and even help prevent new diagnoses.
NHCHC is supporting a learning collaborative, in partnership with the Corporation for Supportive Housing, which will take place over the course of four bi-weekly sessions in February and March 2023 and will offer participants the opportunity for peer learning around non-clinical strategies to support health centers' diabetes prevention efforts.
Session 1: Feb. 9
Session 2: Feb. 23 Session 3: March 9 Session 4: March 23
All sessions are slated for 1-2:30 p.m. CST.
