It's a New Year, are you ready to volunteer?
Salutations, Volunteers!

2019 is finally here and we're so excited to get this party started! Keep the cold weather at bay by volunteering out in your community with organizations like Partners for World Health, the Locker Project, and so many more!

As always, to sign up for an event this month and receive a month of free Garbage to Garden service, RSVP by email, and we will help answer any questions you may have. Remember, events are first come, first serve.

December's Volunteer Orientation will be held on Wednesday, January 30th at 5:30pm. Email Jackie to RSVP.

Happy Composting!
The Garbage to Garden Team

Partners for World Health
Wednesday, January 23rd
1-4pm
Partners for World Health collects medical supplies that healthcare facilities in the U.S. are required to discard and ship them to countries in need. In addition, they also organize medical missions to Southeast Asia and Africa for doctors, nurses, and students. Here is a list of some of their needs:
Macrosorting - opening bags and boxes and sorting items into general category bins
Microsorting - further sorting general category bins into bins of more restrictive categories
Counting, bagging, and labeling similar items
Transferring like liquids to create full containers
Creating kits of supplies (respiratory kits, surgical kits, birthing kits, etc.)
Packing, sealing and labeling boxes for shipment
Volunteering with Preble Street
Thursday, January 17th
3:30pm - 6:30pm
The mission of Preble Street is to provide accessible barrier-free services to empower people experiencing problems with homelessness, housing, hunger, and poverty, and to advocate for solutions to these problems.
Feed your hungry neighbors! Help serve any of 3 meals a day, 7 days a week at the Preble Street Resource Center Soup Kitchen. Volunteers assist with breakfast, lunch, or dinner, or at the weekly Thursday Food Pantry.
Produce Distributions
with the Locker Project

Presumpscot Elementary School
Wednesday, January 16th, 4:00-5:30pm

The Locker Project manages food pantries in schools, providing food for children who are food-insecure to take food home with them. Join the Locker Project in December to help distribute fresh produce and non-perishable food items.

Volunteers help arrange produce and groceries on tables, then assist students and parents with bagging the food up to take home. You will be a welcoming presence, making sure people know they are invited to take food. Everyone is invited to bring food home with them. This a great way to de-stigmatize free food distributions, particularly in the case of fresh food that would otherwise get wasted.

Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program
Brunswick, ME

Hungry neighbors in our community need your help to feed their families! Mid Coast Hunger Prevention has a number of initiatives that work to address food insecurity and volunteers place a vital role in fulfilling their mission by preparing meals, distributing groceries, picking up donated food and a variety of other tasks.

This month, they MCHPP could use volunteers to help pickup donations, and afternoon volunteers for the food bank & food pantry. They're biggest needs are on Tuesdays and Saturdays this month.
SPECIAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Helping out in the shop!
We've wrapped up the season for bagging compost, but we always have something going on! Email us to see how you can get involved.
We can accomodate volunteers at the shop most days of the week, it is a great chance to get involved if you are having a hard time finding other opportunities that fit your schedule.
