Labor Effort Helps Feed Working Families in Need

On May 10, The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 500 partnered with the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council and United Way of the Capital Region to collect food for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Letter carriers collected non-perishable food donations from community members’ mailboxes. Donations were given to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. In total, NALC Harrisburg District collected 357,781 pounds of food for local families in need.
The food drive is the largest one-day food collection day in the country.

Congratulations 2014 "Rising Community Advocates" Class!

Members of Girl Scout Troops 10862 and 10792 recently graduated from the “Rising Community Advocates” training, co-sponsored by United Way of the Capital Region and the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council’s Community Service Committee.

This comprehensive training program focuses on recognizing and mobilizing Girl Scouts to address community service needs. This program also helps Girl Scouts develop skills in community advocacy and in leadership of volunteer projects.

This year the class learned about community needs by visiting the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank. After their visit, Girl Scouts learned how to prepare talking points for giving presentations to community partners. They also distributed leaflets and flyers encouraging participation for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 10. The Girl Scouts used their treasury to buy food for 50 bagged lunches that they prepared and provided to Greater Zion Baptist Church’s homeless family feeding program.

Congratulations to our 2014 class of “Rising Community Advocates”: Loren Aloi, Mekiah Brooks, Brooklyn Kazor, Kelly Kazor, Sydney Kazor, Yvonne Lewis, Brea Neal, Brenda Sutter and Destini Sutter.

Labor Takes the Field for United Way

Join us as organized labor kicks off its 2014 United Way campaign!

On Sunday, August 24, at 12:30 p.m. union representatives, friends and family members are invited to join us at the Harrisburg Senators game for a special kickoff to the 2014 United Way campaign. Hosted by Capital BlueCross, this union family-friendly event includes an all-you-can-eat buffet followed by the game at 2 p.m. This event is an outstanding way to show your support for labor and United Way’s partnership!

A labor representative will throw out the first pitch and delegates from the Harrisburg Region Central Labor Council will be on the field presenting campaign endorsements and union treasury gifts to Tim Fatzinger, president and CEO of United Way of the Capital Region. All labor attendees are encouraged to wear their union colors to display on the Jumbotron.

Tickets are $25 per adult or $15 per child. This event was sold out last year. For more information or to purchase a ticket, contact Karen Smith, vice president of labor participation, at ksmith@uwcr.org.
