SOLAR ECLIPSE PLANS - MONDAY, AUGUST 21

The solar eclipse occurring on Monday, August 21 will be a significant and memorable event throughout its viewing path. Brebeuf Jesuit is going to take advantage of this educational opportunity.
The moon will begin its path in front of the sun at 12:57 p.m., right after the beginning of period 5. It will continue to its maximum coverage point, which occurs at 2:24 p.m., then will end at 3:48 p.m. Click here to see an animation display of how the eclipse will look in Indianapolis.
Brebeuf’s Science Department will be providing a school-wide opportunity for students, faculty & staff to view the eclipse during the 1:35 p.m. PRT, on the football field & bleachers. The Science Department has purchased 250 eclipse viewers which provide for safe viewing that can be shared if needed. The PRT will be extended until 2:35 p.m. in order to allow for all of the students to view the eclipse at its maximum point if they wish.
The afternoon schedule for Monday, August 21 will be:
Period 5 - 12:55-1:35 p.m.
PRT - 1:35-2:35 p.m.
Period 8 - 2:35-3:20 p.m.
VIEWING THE ECLIPSE SAFELY
In order to ensure our students can experience this opportunity safely, Brebeuf will be emphasizing to students the importance of not looking directly at the sun, including during the eclipse, without the aid of specialized solar filters or viewers.
Due to the timing of the eclipse during and after the school day, it is not possible to monitor their viewing all students throughout the time of the eclipse, so we will be educating and reminding them about safe methods of viewing.
Parents and students are encouraged to read the information provided in the link below.  The information included in this link has full details regarding safety precautions and other eclipse information.

Student Spotlight

JOHN WHITING '18

Loves About Brebeuf
I love how the teachers interact with the students. All the teachers really want to get to know who you are and want to get to know you on a personal level. When you go into any office for help, the teachers are willing to help you, even if your particular teacher is not there. I think that the student-teacher dynamic really makes the atmosphere at Brebeuf special.
Class You Are Most Looking Forward to This Year
The class I am most looking forward to this year is Intro to Entrepreneurship with Mr. VanSlambrook. The course is new to Brebeuf and the syllabus is constructed so that we can look at case studies of successful and failed start-up companies and really go in depth on the inner workings of an important part of the economy.
Future Plans
I hope to attend Washington University in St. Louis, Depauw, Miami (OH), or Indiana University next year studying either economics or finance.
Teams & Co-Curriculars
Brebeuf Varsity Baseball
SALT (Student Athletic Leadership Team)
Student Council
Executive Council (Senior Year)
Conservation Club
Investment Club
National Honors Society
Ignatian Scholars
Advanced Science Research
Random Fact(s)
I am the only one of my family to go to Brebeuf. I have three older sisters that all went to Cathedral.
What are you most looking forward to during this school year?
I am most looking forward to getting the college application process over with, so that I can enjoy the rest of my senior year.
What is your current favorite show or series on tv, Netflix, etc.?
I just started watching Game of Thrones which is pretty good, but my favorite show on Netflix is Stranger Things.
What advice would you offer our newest Braves in the Class of 2021?
My advice to the Class of 2021 is to get involved. When clubs and extracurriculars start up, join the ones that catch your eye. You can meet a lot of new people and if you stay committed, it can develop into a leadership position.

Freshman Ignatian Scholars Retreat

The Freshman Ignatian Scholars Retreat took place on Tuesday, August 8 at the University of Indianapolis. After a welcome and a brief introduction to the Ignatian Scholars Program by Mr. Miller, who discussed their theme for the year, “Knowing Yourself," Scholars engaged in a number of icebreaker activities in order to get to know one another better.  Brebeuf Jesuit Principal Mr. VanSlambrook, gave a very revealing talk about leadership and all of the various forms that it can take. Scholars were taken on a tour of campus, listened to the President of UIndy and a member of the Board of Trustees at Brebeuf and former Brebeuf student and parent, Rob Manuel, and were treated to a talk by former Mayor of Indianapolis and current Uindy visiting Fellow, not to mention a former Brebeuf parent, Greg Ballard.
To read more about the retreat, please click here.

Diversity Dialogue - August 24

In light of the events of last weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia, many Brebeuf Jesuit students have expressed a need to share their concerns, fears, and hopes, particularly in regards to the political and racial turmoil and violence that took place.
This dialogue will provide students a platform, in the form of a community forum, to discuss these issues and authentically listen to the viewpoints of others. The major question/theme is “How do we learn from and move past this moment?”
This Dialogue will take place on Thursday, August 24 (Day 5), during Period 3 (10:45-11:45) in the Efroymson Auditorium.
