As we celebrate Women's History Month, we take a moment to reflect on the powerful contributions of women throughout history and the ongoing journey toward equity, empowerment, and leadership. This month is an opportunity to honor the women who have shaped our world, as well as the many inspiring women in our own Brebeuf Jesuit community.

We are honored to spotlight the achievements, challenges, and reflections of some of our remarkable alumnae. Their stories of perseverance, service, and leadership inspire us all to continue working toward a world where every woman has the opportunity to thrive and make an impact.

Vicki Hall '88
Vicki's journey since graduating from Brebeuf Jesuit has been nothing short of extraordinary. As the top high school basketball player in the country, she went on to achieve a standout career at the University of Texas, where she remains in the top 10 for scoring and rebounding. Inducted into both the UT Hall of Honor in 2018 and the Indiana Hall of Fame in 2015, Vicki also played for Team USA, winning World Championships and the Goodwill Games. Her professional basketball career spanned 16 years in Europe, the ABL, and the WNBA. After retiring, she spent 11 years coaching college basketball and two seasons coaching in the WNBA, and now assists teams with advanced scouting. In 2023, Vicki transitioned to a new passion: educating people in personal finance and investments.
Vicki credits her time at Brebeuf for shaping her success, especially in time management and academic preparation. She fondly recalls teachers like Ms. Compton, Ms. Rocap, and Mrs. McCarthy, who fostered hard work and commitment and always supported her.
Early in her career, Vicki faced challenges as a woman in a male-dominated sport. With few professional opportunities for women in the U.S. at the time, she played in Europe where women's leagues were already established. Despite these obstacles, Vicki's determination and perseverance led her to success. Her mom, a constant source of inspiration, supported her every step of the way, alongside other role models like gymnast Nadia Comaneci, who taught her what it meant to be the best.
To young women at Brebeuf, Vicki offers simple yet powerful advice: “Follow your dreams! You can achieve anything with hard work and perseverance.”
She encourages them to overcome fears and roadblocks, sharing her own experience of overcoming a fear of math to later become a professional financial advisor.
Vicki has also given back to the next generation of women by mentoring students, including creating a program at Indiana State where she paired players with female mentors in various fields of study. She has always been passionate about helping young women find their voices and lead with strength.
Reflecting on Women's History Month, Vicki points to the progress women have made, from gaining the right to vote to owning businesses and buying homes independently. “We can't go back,” she says. Yet, she believes there's more work to be done, especially in leadership roles. As she looks back, she sees that while opportunities have grown, the fight for women to lead is ongoing.
Some of Vicki's best memories from Brebeuf are the times spent with her sports teams—volleyball, cross country, track, and basketball. These moments, shared with teammates, taught her the importance of teamwork and growing together. Now back in Indianapolis, Vicki has reconnected with the Brebeuf community, continuing to live out the values of leadership and service instilled during her Jesuit education.
For Vicki, the Jesuit principles of service, kindness, and leadership continue to shape her work and life, and she remains committed to making a difference wherever she can.

Lauren Smith '94
Since graduating from Brebeuf Jesuit, Lauren has built an impressive career in medicine and leadership. She attended Loyola University New Orleans for her undergraduate studies, followed by the University of Maryland School of Medicine. After completing medical school, she matched into Emergency Medicine at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, where she spent years working in the community and later as faculty at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital. Lauren earned an MBA from IU Kelley School of Business and now serves as the Associate Chief Medical Officer at UI Health and an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine.
Lauren's commitment to service has remained central to her career. She has been actively involved with the Chicago Jesuit Academy (CJA), where she served on the Junior Board, Board of Directors, and as Chair, helping expand the school and open it to girls. Her time at Brebeuf instilled a lifelong dedication to the Jesuit mission of “being a person for others,” which continues to guide her work.
As an African-American woman in a field where women of color make up less than 3% of physicians, Lauren has faced unique challenges. Yet, her belief in herself, supported by her family and mentors, has helped her overcome obstacles. Representation in medicine has been important for Lauren, as she found strength in seeing others who looked like her in leadership roles.
Lauren draws inspiration from her grandmother, mother, and Shirley Chisholm—three women who overcame immense challenges and made lasting impacts. She encourages young women at Brebeuf to dream big, find mentors, and trust that strength comes through life's pauses.
Although Lauren struggled to find mentors early in her career, she now actively mentors others, particularly those considering medicine. She believes mentorship is key to breaking down barriers, and she is committed to guiding the next generation of women in the field.
Lauren's time at Brebeuf was formative, and she remains connected to the school through friendships and family. She continues to embody the Jesuit values of respect, humility, and curiosity in both her leadership and service.
Her journey is a testament to resilience, service, and the power of community. Lauren remains grateful for her Brebeuf education and the Jesuit values that continue to shape her life and work.

Mali Bacon '00
Since graduating from Brebeuf Jesuit, Mali Bacon has built an impactful career rooted in arts communication, equitable economic development, and social impact. After earning her degree in advertising from Ball State University in 2004, she found herself immersed in media and the nonprofit arts sector. Today, based in Indianapolis, Mali has raised millions of dollars to fuel her city's future, all while continuing her work to create viable career pathways for artists.
Mali reflects fondly on her time at Brebeuf, which she credits for giving her the tools to excel in college and beyond. “Brebeuf prepared me in ways I didn't even realize at the time,” she says. It was during her high school years that Mali discovered her passion for graphic design, a field she has embraced throughout her career. “Brebeuf allowed me to experiment with digital communications and explore my creativity,” she recalls. “I'm thankful for the art teachers who gave us the freedom to test the limits of our creativity.”
As a Black woman in the creative field, Mali has faced unique challenges. “We have to work a lot harder to be taken seriously,” she says, acknowledging the added layers of being both a woman and a person of color. Despite these challenges, Mali has learned to embrace her womanhood and leverage it as a strength. “I lean into our distinct strengths and use them to overcome obstacles,” she explains.
Mali's biggest inspiration comes from her mother, who played a pivotal role in shaping her life. “My mom sacrificed for us and had a sense of style, grace, and discretion,” she says. “She was strategic, and I owe her everything. I've learned so much from her.” Her mother's guidance has been a constant source of strength as Mali navigates her career and life.
For young women at Brebeuf, Mali has this advice: “Be unique in your own right. Know who you are and embrace your individuality. Our perspectives are powerful when we work together.” She also emphasizes the importance of mentorship and community, noting her involvement in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she helps shape and support young women through scholarship programs and community initiatives.
Reflecting on Women's History Month, Mali recognizes its significance in honoring the contributions of women. “We deserve recognition and equity every day,” she says. “Women's Month helps reinforce our important contributions to society.” As for the evolution of women's roles in leadership, she believes women's leadership has always been vital. “We need each other, and we need to be valued at our highest,” she says.
When asked about resources she'd recommend, Mali highlights works like What I Know About Art by Kimberly Drew, Hidden Figures, and Michelle Obama's memoir. She also encourages young women to explore the inspiring stories of Issa Rae and Aurora James.
Mali's fondest memories of Brebeuf revolve around the lifelong friendships she made with people like Nick, Jarvis, Lisa, and Morgan. From Kairos retreats to cross-country runs on the beautiful trails behind the school, these moments shaped her in ways she continues to cherish. She stays connected to the Brebeuf community by attending class reunions, checking in with old friends, and inviting them to share in important moments, such as her participation in the BUTTER Fine Art Fair.
Mali credits her Jesuit education with deeply influencing her approach to leadership and service. “The Jesuit values of service, compassion, and support for others are so aligned with my own,” she says. “They've instilled in me a system of care that continues to guide me in my work today.”
Mali's journey is one of creativity, leadership, and social impact—guided by the values of service and community that were instilled in her at Brebeuf Jesuit.
