Villanova Observes 49th Annual Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
| |
From Villanova's Media Room: Villanova University will observe its 49th annual Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (HHAW) Saturday, November 11, through Monday, November 20. Sponsored by the Center for Peace and Justice Education, HHAW is an event centered on education, advocacy and service, with the ultimate goal of ending hunger and homelessness worldwide.
HHAW began at Villanova in 1975, under the guidance of the late Rev. Ray Jackson, OSA, as a discussion of the root causes of poverty. In the years since, the initiative has expanded beyond the University to more than 700 campuses and communities nationwide, becoming the most widely organized hunger and homelessness awareness event of its type in the United States.

Bishop Paride Taban Named 2023 Opus Prize Laureate
| |
From Villanova's Media Room: The late Bishop Paride Taban, founder of Holy Trinity Peace Village Kuron in South Sudan, has been chosen as the 2023 Opus Prize Laureate, as announced by The Opus Prize Foundation and Villanova University in a ceremony on Thursday afternoon. As the winner of the annual faith-based humanitarian award, Bishop Taban’s Holy Trinity Peace Village Kuron will receive the one-million-dollar prize that recognizes social entrepreneurship championing faith-filled change.
Accepting the award posthumously on behalf of the late Bishop was Dr. Margaret Itto, deputy chair of the Board for Holy Trinity Peace Village Kuron and State Minister for Health in Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan.
“Although it saddens me deeply that Bishop Taban is not here with us, I am truly honored to accept this award on his behalf and help recognize the passion and devotion he gave to Holy Trinity Peace Village,” Dr. Itto said. “He has impacted so many lives in Sudan through not only the founding of The Village but the continued love he provided to its community for almost 20 years. His impact will be felt there forever.”

While our Villanova community has responded generously and donations continue to be collected, we are in need of 100 meals by Monday, November 20th. We invite our neighbors to participate and all contributions are appreciated.

Wisdom of Sufism is a dynamic exploration of contemporary artistic responses to the profound spiritual tradition of Sufism. This group exhibition showcases diverse expressions inspired by the teachings of Rumi, a 13th-century poet and theologian, delving into themes of self-discovery and transcendence.
Through the mediums of photography, painting, calligraphy, musical instruments, and interpretive dance, these artists offer a unique lens into the depths of the human spirit. By melding ancient wisdom with modern forms, they invite viewers to contemplate the universal truths that resonate across time and culture. Join us in this immersive journey that celebrates the enduring wisdom of Sufism, uniting past and present in a tapestry of artistic expression.
Wisdom of Sufism will be on view at the Gallery from October 26, 2023 to January 11, 2024.
About the Gallery
Over the years, guest artists exhibiting at the gallery have come from as far away as Kuwait and as close to home as Philadelphia. The gallery has hosted exhibits of traditional watercolors from China, carved masks and totems from the Yoruba culture of West Africa, Batiks from Belorussia, and handcrafted ceramics and glassware from Italy. We have served as an inaugural venue for young artists and provided an exhibition space for talented older citizens whose discovery of the artist within came much later in life.
All exhibits are open to the public and are free of charge.
The Gallery is located in the heart of Villanova's main campus on the second floor of the Connelly Center.
