CSU Call for Proposals: Learning Innovation for Future-Forward Teaching (LIFT)
The California State University system is now accepting proposals for the Learning Innovation for Future-Forward Teaching (LIFT) program, a one-year competitive funding opportunity supporting faculty in designing and piloting teaching innovations that intentionally embed durable, transferable skills into undergraduate courses and programs. LIFT projects should help students make meaningful connections between what they are learning, how that learning applies in real-world contexts, and the skills they are developing for future careers and civic engagement. Proposed efforts may include course redesigns, applied learning activities, interdisciplinary collaborations, and strategies that integrate reflection, assessment, and engagement with alumni, industry, or community partners.
Approximately 30 grants will be awarded across three funding tiers ranging from $10,000 to $30,000, depending on project scope. Projects should be implemented during the 2026–27 academic year and include plans for assessment, documentation, and sharing of materials to support scaling across departments and campuses. This opportunity is open to CSU tenured, tenure-track, and lecturer faculty from all disciplines, with both individual and team-based proposals encouraged.

The CSU Chancellor’s Early-Career Faculty Fellowship Award Proposal
Internal Application Deadline: 5 PM on Monday, May 18, 2026
The California State University (CSU) Chancellor’s Office is launching a new systemwide fellowship to recognize and support exceptional early-career faculty across CSU campuses. This prestigious opportunity highlights junior faculty who demonstrate excellence in scholarship, teaching, and engagement, while also showing strong potential for federal research funding and national impact. Each participating CSU campus may nominate up to two assistant professors to represent their institution as part of a systemwide cohort.
Selected fellows will participate in professional engagement visits to Washington, D.C., where they will connect with program officers from federal agencies (e.g., NSF, NIH, DoD), gain insight into federal funding opportunities, and showcase their research and student impact at a CSU-hosted Congressional reception.

- Tenure-track assistant professors at CSUN
- Demonstrated excellence in research, teaching, and/or service
- Interest in federal funding and research engagement
- Ability to participate in fellowship activities, including travel to Washington, D.C.

First Annual Decolonial Research Methods Institute (DRMI)
The Ethnic Studies Center for Research, Activism, and Community Empowerment (RACE) at California State University, Northridge is thrilled to announce the launch of our first annual Decolonial Research Methods Institute (DRMI), taking place Summer 2026. DRMI is a one-week intensive training that supports faculty, educators, students, and community-based researchers in developing ethical, culturally grounded, and liberatory research practices. Rooted in Indigenous, Black, diasporic, and transborder epistemologies, this institute provides space for collaborative learning, methodological innovation, and community accountability. We welcome applicants who are committed to transforming research practices toward justice, accountability, and community empowerment.

New CSUN AI Training and Workshops Hub
CSUN has launched a new AI Training and Workshops webpage, providing a centralized space for faculty, staff, and students to discover artificial intelligence learning opportunities across the university. For the research community, this resource offers an easy way to identify professional development opportunities that can support grant activity, research design, data analysis, and the integration of emerging AI tools into scholarly work.
The site also introduces new event categories to help users quickly find opportunities tailored to their role, while supporting campus units in promoting their programming more effectively:

These categories are designed to improve visibility and ensure that AI-related workshops and trainings reach the appropriate audiences. Amplifying Community Through Sustainable Stories on 88.5 KCSN
The CSUN Institute for Sustainability has launched a new radio series, Amplifying Community Through Sustainable Stories, airing on 88.5 KCSN The SoCal Sound. This interview-based program expands the conversation around sustainability by highlighting stories rooted in local knowledge, community innovation, and meaningful action across CSUN and the broader region. Episodes feature voices from campus and community partners who are advancing sustainability in diverse and impactful ways, offering listeners new perspectives on environmental and social challenges. The show airs live on Sundays at 5:30 a.m., with episodes made available the following week on the Institute for Sustainability’s website. Tune in to stay connected to sustainability efforts at CSUN and explore past and upcoming conversations with leaders and changemakers in this space.

Digital Equity Day 2026
Please join us for the 2026 Digital Equity Day, which highlights CSUN’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that technology serves everyone. From artificial intelligence to accessible learning environments, the event showcases how innovation can be leveraged to promote inclusion, opportunity, and student success. We are especially proud to share that the keynote will be delivered by Jenny Nguyen, a doctoral student in the ELPS program and the 2026 Doctoral Fellow in Academic Technology. The fellowship itself is a collaboration between the Doctoral Program, Academic Technology, and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs — and Jenny's keynote is a testament to what that partnership can produce. Her research examines faculty perspectives on AI and the equity implications of its integration into higher education. Details and registration are available on the DED website.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) Class
Are you looking for practical tools to reduce stress, improve wellbeing, and build resilience during challenging times? We have a new date for our latest Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) class. MBSR is an evidence-based in‑person course designed to support mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing. MBSR is an internationally recognized program that combines guided meditation, mindful movement, and experiential learning to help participants respond to stress with greater awareness, balance, and ease.

2026 Jerome Richfield Memorial Fellow Announced
The Jerome Richfield Memorial Fellowship recognizes a CSUN faculty member engaged in high-quality, high-impact research. Each year, the Fellow is invited to present a lecture as part of the Provost’s Colloquium Series, which celebrates faculty scholarship and provides opportunities for engagement among faculty, administrators, students, and staff. Research and Sponsored Programs, with support from the Jerome Richfield Memorial Fund, is pleased to announce that the 2026 Jerome Richfield Memorial Fellow is Professor Daniela Gerson of the Department of Journalism.
A reception honoring Professor Gerson will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Location will be provided upon registration. Registration is required as there is limited capacity. CSU Growth in Undergraduate Innovation, Discovery and Engagement (GUIDE)
Pre-Proposal Deadline: By 5:00 p.m. PDT on Monday, April 20, 2026
The California State University (CSU) Chancellor’s Office is launching a new GUIDE funding initiative to enhance undergraduate student engagement across the system and promote innovative, inter-campus faculty collaboration. This program is designed to foster promising one- year research, scholarly or creative activity (RSCA) projects that can lead directly to the preparation of a proposal for major extramural funding.
Program Goals:
- Enhance Student Success: Provide meaningful, hands-on, faculty-mentored RSCA opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students.
- Foster Collaboration: Encourage multi-campus faculty teams to collaborate on shared research challenges or creative endeavors that engage undergraduate students across campuses.
- Secure External Funding: Position CSU faculty teams to successfully compete for significant external grants and contracts following the seed funding period.
- Advance Interdisciplinary Fields: In addition to supporting high-impact projects across the full range of disciplines offered within the CSU system, this program has the goal of advancing interdisciplinary collaborations.
Proposals will be accepted on three separate tracks:
- Track 1: Collaborative multi-campus. Involves two or more faculty members from different CSU campuses. The proposal should be submitted by the lead Principal Investigator’s (PI) campus (maximum award: $80,000). For multi-campus proposals: The research team must include faculty from at least two different CSU campuses. The purpose of the multi-campus track is to catalyze campus synergies. A faculty member can only be PI on one proposal and a faculty collaborator on up to one Track 1 proposal.
- Track 2: Single campus/faculty members conducting research at their home campus (maximum award: $40,000).
- Track 3: Mid-career resilience. Specifically for mid-career faculty seeking to re-engage in or pivot their research, scholarly or creative activities (RSCA) (maximum award: $40,000).

Grant Writing Support with Hanover Research
CSUN faculty can access personalized grant writing and proposal development support through our partnership with Hanover Research, at no cost to you. Hanover pairs PIs with experienced grant consultants who provide in-depth proposal review, editing, and strategic feedback, particularly helpful for revising submissions based on funder reviewer comments. After an initial consultation, proposals are placed in Hanover’s service queue, and written feedback is typically returned within 1–2 weeks of your agreed submission date.
We currently have several openings available starting in May 2026. If you are planning to submit an external proposal with a deadline starting in June 2026 and would like to acquire grant support, please contact Dr. Edgar Lopez (edgar.lopez@csun.edu) with the (1) grant opportunity name, (2) grant funder, (3) link to solicitation/guidelines, and (4) full submission deadline so we can coordinate timely support.

IRB Updates on Generative AI Use in Research
The CSUN Institutional Review Board (IRB) is currently exploring how the use of ChatGPT and other Generative AI tools may be reflected in research involving humans. As part of these ongoing discussions, IRB will begin including additional questions in the Cayuse IRB protocol inviting researchers to describe whether and how Generative AI tools are used in their research procedures and data analysis. Researchers may be asked to describe any anticipated risks or benefits from the use of Generative AI tools in their work. These questions are intended to better understand emerging research practices and are not meant to discourage the use of Generative AI in research.
To support researchers as these updates are implemented, IRB will host office hours during the Spring 2026 semester. Dates and times will be announced soon. These sessions will provide space to ask questions, receive guidance, and discuss how to appropriately disclose Generative AI use in IRB submissions.

These are informal, Q&A-style sessions where you can stop by at any time during the scheduled window to ask questions or get guidance. There is no formal presentation or agenda. It is just dedicated time for you to connect directly with our team. Whether you’re preparing a proposal, managing an active award, or exploring future opportunities, we’re here to support you.

Medtronic is one of the largest medical technology companies in the world providing products that treat 70 health conditions and include cardiac devices, cranial and spine robotics, insulin pumps, and more. Medtronic Minimed, in partnership with California State University, Northridge (CSUN), invites faculty to submit proposals for innovative research projects that advance diabetes care, technology, treatment accessibility, and patient-centered solutions. Diabetes remains one of the most pressing health challenges of our time. New Federal Requirement: Research Security Training for Covered Individuals
In accordance with the Chips and Science Act of 2022 (§10634), several federal research agencies, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) are implementing new Research Security Training requirements for individuals participating in federally sponsored research.
To ensure compliance, the CSU Chancellor’s Office has released a Research Security Training module that meets federal standards outlined by the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). The training will be offered via CSU Learn and cover key areas such as (1) Protecting research data and intellectual property, (2) International collaborations and disclosure requirements, (3) Cybersecurity and foreign travel best practices, and (4) Export control awareness. Completion of this training will be required for all individuals listed as senior/key personnel or covered participants on federally sponsored research proposals and awards prior to proposal submission. Hanover Workshop: National Institutes of Health: A Series of Opportunities
Through Hanover Research support, there is an opportunity to enroll in a learning workshop, “National Institutes of Health: A Series of Opportunities.” This course includes two primary components:
(1) An NIH introductory module designed to strengthen principal investigator (PI) competitiveness with NIH-specific resources, uncovering keys to success for prospective applicants.
(2) A module on the NIH's most common R activity codes, intended to help PIs to decipher which R best fits their research goals, draft application components per Hanover’s recommendations for a competitive submission, and export a templated proposal draft.
While the modules cover fundamentals of the NIH and several well-known R-series activity codes, along with many details, they are a distillation of extensive NIH content. Links to original comprehensive material provided by the NIH along with other citations and resources are provided throughout the modules.
