Owl Spotlight
Sophomore Madison M. is an outstanding, active member of the WISH Academy community. She's at the top of her class, and a member of the Academic Decathlon team, earning Gold in Interview. She was nominated by her peers as homecoming duchess and was appointed team captain of the WISH Academy Varsity Basketball Team (she's on the Track Team as well). She is the founder and president of the Asian Culture Appreciation Club, which meets weekly and Madison teaches about a different Asian country. Outside of school she is an active leader in Girl Scouts and has earned the President’s Volunteer Service Gold Award for serving her community with over 100 hours of community service. She is also the ASB Secretary, Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook, and a LINK leader. Madison proudly proclaims that Mr. Croal has had a huge impact on her wanting to become a math teacher. Madison likes how Mr. Croal teaches math so much that he helped bring back her love and interest in the subject. Overall, Madison enjoys WISH Academy HS because "the teachers are wonderful, my voice is heard, and I'm encouraged to be creative and others listen to my input."

In the Classroom
Victoria Phillips is a legend at WISH Academy and a favorite among the students, teaching 11th and 12th Grade English, AP Language, AP Literature, and Yearbook/Journalism. Her students appreciate her high standards for achievement and rigorous approach to deconstructing literature. They particularly love her Socratic seminars where students break into small groups and discuss their own perspectives on a novel, based on their life experiences. Right now, her AP Language class is reading Fences by August Wilson, her English class is reading Born a Crime by Trevor Noah and 1984 by George Orwell, and her 12th Graders are analyzing poetry elements. She loves teaching at WISH because it allows her to work with a diverse group of students that are very driven. "WISH offers a very unique experience because it is a smaller school, and I have been able to get to know the majority of the student population. I have been able to see them grow and mature and become not only great students, but also citizens in their community and school," she says. "I not only want to expand their academic abilities but I also want to build their character so that they are not only educated, but well rounded and caring students."

Good Times
To celebrate Black History Month, the WAHS Theatre Production class presented a tribute to playwrights August Wilson and Lorraine Hansberry this month. The selection of scenes gave a historical look at life during the 1920's, 30's, 40's and 50's for Black artists and families, and opened up a lot of discussion for our students. As always, we are immensely proud of our talented students and, as an audience, were completely engaged in the riveting, insightful material.

Sports Superstars
Jayla De-Armas Osborne is a junior at WISH Academy and a stellar scholar and athlete, who has been a dominant force on the Varsity volleyball and basketball teams. She even did a season with the WISH baseball team her sophomore year! Jayla is a powerhouse who always gives 100% effort with a great attitude. In addition to being a top athlete at WISH Academy, Jayla is also at the top of her class academically. We are glad to still have one more year with this amazing student athlete!

Hoots Student
"I like so many things about WAHS! It's a close knit community so we have the opportunity to get to know one another. I appreciate how the mental health needs of students are taken into consideration and for me, when I needed support, action steps were taken to help me out. I use the Teen Wellness Room because it provides a space for students to decompress. I really like that the school is supportive of the LGBTQ community and that clubs are student-led and student-driven. The faculty and staff, who are great, consider students' opinions and respect us. I'm more confident in math than I have been before because my math teachers take their time to explain things to me."
--Marlin Swinford, 9th grade
Family
"My children (9th and 12th) have been a part of WISH since day one! We chose WISH because our family wanted to be a part of helping to support a school from the beginning of its conception as we thought we would feel more of a sense of community and be able to participate in valuable ways. It has been exactly that! Both myself, my husband and my children have been able to help create community service opportunities, support the school on tours, and now I am an internal substitute teacher and get to see firsthand the dedication of the staff each and every day. I have been able to experience when things work and more importantly when they do not. I then see how the staff works to improve, redirect and grow forward. WISH Academy academics are both robust and varied, meeting each student where they are at, offering traditional courses to honors to AP courses. My children have benefited greatly from these options. I feel strongly that schools should recognize the individual student, and WISH understands this philosophy and lays the groundwork to support all of our children along their educational pathway. In addition, I have greatly valued the social emotional work that many students are guided with even in their upper high school years. WISH is there for the whole child. I am happy to say, my children are flourishing both as students and as individuals that are connected to a greater community. They are having an impactful experience along with a rewarding education." -- Eve Keller WAHS parent
Faculty
"I enjoy connecting with parents and supporting them with their needs and seeing the growth with their scholars. The relationships that I have with parents is a game changer that makes all the difference and makes working together easy!"
