Student Scholarship Stories: Jenna Miller
For Jenna Miller, DPT ’22 scholarships have made a huge impact in her time at Sacramento State. “The scholarship funds helped cover the cost of moving out of Sacramento for my first 12-week clinical rotation. Knowing that I could afford to make this temporary move enabled me to focus on providing the best treatment possible for my patients.”
“The scholarships that I have received throughout my academic journey, both as an undergraduate and graduate student, are the primary reason that I will graduate with minimal debt. I am incredibly grateful for every person and organization that has helped fund my degrees, and I plan on continuing to pay it forward in my career as a physical therapist," says Miller.
You can learn more about Jenna Miller and other past recipients on the Renaissance Society website.

Scholarship application tips for students: Staying organized when applying for college scholarships should help the process flow smoothly. The office of Financial Aid & Scholarships recommends the following tips for students when filling out their applications.
- Note your accomplishments. Many scholarship applications have a section where you can list all of your academic and extracurricular achievements. Accomplishments may include awards, honors, leadership, volunteer activities, school publications, part-time jobs, etc. Brainstorming a list of accomplishments in one document will help save time and prevent students from overlooking an important achievement when filling out applications.
- Make a checklist. A checklist of to-do items can help students complete applications to the best of their ability, making sure students have fulfilled each requirement. The checklist may include the following points: read all eligibility requirements, proofread all application materials, ask a mentor to proofread as well, complete all sections of the application, and gather all extra materials needed for submission such as transcripts, resume, and letters of recommendation.
- Save a copy. Students should save copies of submitted scholarship applications. Saving copies of applications can make it easy for them to resubmit applications should technical errors occur when submitting them online.

Sacramento State Welcomes Local Pastors' to Campus
Sacramento State, under the guidance and leadership of the President's Office hosted local pastors to showcase various aspects of the campus and student support programs.
The visit held on October 19th featured the following leaders and churches:
- Bishop Parnell Lovelace, Jr. – Center of Praise Ministries
- Pastor Lewis Keyes – Center of Praise Ministries
- Dr. Erinn Harris – Center of Praise Ministries
- Rev. Anthony Sadler – Shiloh Baptist Church
- Pastor Kenneth Reece – St. Paul Baptist Church
- Kim Smith – City Church of Sacramento
- Rev. Cubie Finley – Murph Emanuel AME Church
The event was coordinated by Nathan Dietrich, Office of Public Affairs and Advocacy, and Melinda Wilson-Ramey, from the Office of Inclusive Excellence. Together in partnership with the Division of Student Affairs, the visit included a presentation by the College of Continuing Education, a tour of the first floor of Lassen Hall to share the great work of the Student Service Center, information from Admissions and Outreach, and the Career Center. In addition, church leaders learned about resources offered through Student Academic Success and Educational Equity Programs including a tour of EOP, the MLK Center, and the PARC. The visit culminated in a tour of the Planetarium.
Overall, the pastors' visit represented a landmark opportunity to connect with the region as an anchor institution and to support the goals of promoting a college-going culture in the African American community. The meeting also helped to fortify linkages with the CSU Super Sunday Initiative, in which the campus has been a partner for a myriad of years to advance the value of higher education access and attainment. According to Dr. Watson-Derbigny, Associate Vice President, Student Retention and Academic Success, the visit was instrumental in building even greater connections to the community, while raising awareness of the numerous resources that Sacramento State provides to uplift the African American community and the scholars it serves.

2021 Our Promise Campaign: Recovering, Rebuilding, and Reviving California
‘Tis the season for giving. One of the largest philanthropic campaigns in California for state employees and alumni returned in 2021 with hopes of making an even bigger impact than last year. The Our Promise Campaign ran from September 1 to November 12, 2021. As an anchor university, it is imperative that we at Sac State continue to invest in and give back to our community. The Our Promise Campaign demonstrates the care for our local organizations and other notable charities. With over 4,700 organizations, donations directly benefit K-12 education, health and well-being, homelessness and housing, arts and culture, inclusive economic opportunity, and environmental sustainability efforts.
In 2020, the Our Promise Campaign raised $63,000 with more than 288 Sac State employees participating. Since its establishment in 1957, Our Promise has raised a total of $5.5 million. In 2021 the University hopes to exceed its goal of $65,000 and increase its annual participation rate of 12%. This year's campaign efforts were led by Co-Chairs Haley Myers-Dilion (Parents and Families Coordinator) and Racquel Reber the Sophomore and Career Success Coordinator for the Educational Opportunity Program, both under the Student Academic Success and Educational Equity Programs (SASEEP).
