Instructors Make the World Go Round! |
At Osher, we are lucky to have a roster of about 250 distinguished instructors. Some teach for us every term and some teach on a rotating basis at different times throughout the year. We simply could not run our program without them! These kind and generous souls either volunteer their time or take a small amount of pay compared to the hours and hours of preparation it takes to create their slides and run their classes. Instructors help us keep prices affordable for our members while freely sharing their lifetimes of experience in our classrooms. The next time your Osher class ends, be sure to thank these lovely and unique individuals for all that they give to us. Each dedicated instructor creates connections between like-minded people, building a supportive mini community within our larger community of lifelong learners. Thank you, all instructors. Osher really could not be Osher without you!

Each week, Marcie's Movie Club will watch and then discuss a film at Salt Lake Film Society's Broadway Centre Cinemas-SLC's home for independent film. There will be a 1:45 intro, 2:00 film, and a short discussion afterwards. Films will be recently released titles representing a variety of genres, including big-name, independent, documentary, and international titles. The class fee covers a movie ticket each week. If a class must be missed, club members will be offered complimentary tickets to watch the film or another one on their own at another time. LIMITED, validated parking in the garage next to Broadway - in between Copper Onion and Copper Common - is available on a first come, first served basis. Osher members will connect with one another over independent, first-run cinema, as well as with their fellow global citizens through documentary and international films. As Roger Ebert noted, movies are an empathy machine!

Looking forward to swimming with sea turtles, or finding Nemo? Join your instructor in the pool at Neptune Divers for an hour-and-a-half learning experience on snorkeling. Pick up safety procedures and tips for how to get the most out of an opportunity to view sea-life from the perspective of ocean animals - IN the water, not looking AT it. Changing rooms are available, or you can just show up in your swimsuit. You are welcome to bring your own equipment, or rent from Neptune for $10 for the session. Classes are limited to six participants.

This class will celebrate the 55th anniversary of the printing of the "Pentagon Papers" in the New York Times and the Washington Post. The US government had previously filed a lawsuit to prevent the publication of the papers claiming that the publication would cause 'irreparable injury' to the United States. However, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the right of the Press to print the papers based on the public's 'right to know' the truth about government deception regarding the Vietnam War.

Historical novels tell interesting stories about a time, a place, and the people living there. Authors must do extensive research so their writing accurately reflects the history. Using The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club by Helen Simonson as the launching point, this class will offer a one-hour look at the history of England at the end of World War I and after the Spanish Influenza pandemic, emphasizing rapidly changing political, economic, and social realities. We will then spend an hour discussing the novel as contemporary literature. Readers and history buffs welcome!
Participants should read The Hazelbourne Ladies Motorcycle and Flying Club before class.

When you think of rock & roll, do you think of that classic era of the Fifties, Sixties, and Seventies? The music was incredible. Just hearing it made you glad to be alive. But they were tumultuous times, too. Demonstrations over civil rights, the Viet Nam War, political assassinations - sometimes it seemed like the world was coming apart. The music helped us get through it. This is a memoir of those days of wonder and rage.

The art included spans five centuries of art, from Girl with A Pearl Earring to Campbell's Soup Cans. After the presentation, Eli will share several of his renditions via a slide show.

Osher members, how would you like a sneak peek at one of northern Utah's best-kept secrets? Soon, a new visitor center will revolutionize the guest experience at Antelope Island State Park. The massive facility will feature meeting spaces, a classroom, a dry lab, all new exhibitions, and sweeping views of the Great Salt Lake from multiple outdoor terraces. The new building also includes a giant screen theater which will show the custom-created 3-D film Secrets of Great Salt Lake.
|
The film is 44 minutes long and takes viewers on a journey from ancient Lake Bonneville to modern-day Utah. Antelope Island State Park is inviting the University of Utah's Osher Institute to preview the new facility and the film before it opens to the public. Additionally, Park Ranger James Bustin will give a brief presentation on bird populations and the changing Great Salt Lake. This event, and admission to the state park, is free of charge, but you must register to attend.

The word "shaman" is often used to describe individuals who carry ancient spiritual and healing traditions within their communities. For nearly 30 years, Jerry Buie and Bruce Frazier have built meaningful relationships with indigenous healers, medicine people, and traditional elders from around the world, including the Andes and Amazon, regions of Peru, Mongolia, Africa, and native communities here in the United States. This is a unique, first-time opportunity for Osher members to explore these spiritual practices in an accessible and thoughtful way. Please join us for what promises to be an inspiring and meaningful presentation.

Join the Osher Booker Book Group for our August meeting as we discuss June/July's book selection, The Luminaries (2013) by Eleanor Catton. The novel examines the world of shipping, banking, and the gold rush in 1800's New Zealand. At 800 pages, we need two months to read it! We meet monthly at the Osher Building to discuss the previous month's book selection. Everyone is welcome. Perhaps we are "novel" in that we actually discuss the book! Next meeting (September), we will discuss The Life of Pi (2002) by Yann Martel.
Please note: Registration is required for each month's meeting you plan to attend.
