Dear Colleagues,
The search for two vice provosts in the Division of Academic Affairs has concluded. After thorough vetting and a tough decision among several highly qualified candidates, I am extremely pleased to announce that David (Dave) Clark has accepted the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (VPAA) position and Canan Bilen-Green has accepted the position of Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs (VPFA). Both positions will work closely with shared governance, academic deans, and divisions across the university in fulfilment of areas of responsibility and oversight. The VPAA will focus on academics, assessment, and accreditation (see the position description), while the VPFA will concentrate on faculty and academic staff personnel matters, including faculty promotion and tenure, faculty and academic staff professional development, leadership training, and compliance reporting (see the full PD). Dave will start on July 1 and Canan will start on August 1. I’m eager to have them on board and look forward to working with them both!
Dave completed his post-secondary education at Iowa State University, where he earned a BS and MA in English, and a PhD in Rhetoric and Professional Communication. Dave’s entire career has been at UWM, where he has brought in nearly $300K in grant funding and served as Vice Provost for Student Success, Senior Associate Dean/Special Assistant to the Provost, Interim Dean of the College of Letters and Science, Associate Dean for Humanities in the College of Letters and Science, and Chair of the English Department.
Canan earned an MS and PhD in Statistics from the University of Wyoming and comes to UWM from North Dakota State University (NDSU) where she served as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Equity for seven years. While at NDSU, Canan brought in nearly $12M in external funding and also served as Vice Provost for Faculty Advancement, Executive Director of NDSU Advance Forward, and Interim Director of the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute.
I congratulate the Search and Screen Committees, chaired by Prasenjit Guptasarma (VPAA) and Jen Doll (VPFA), for their outstanding work, and I thank Interim Special Assistants Suzanne Boyd, Stephen Schmid, and Mark Srite for their excellent service and leadership.
