From concerts and celebrations to community gatherings, Tall Oaks Hall has always been a space for connection. Now, it carries the name of a true community partner whose support helps us continue to grow, gather, and thrive.

HAPTIC HEALING: THE FUTURE OF PARKINSON’S THERAPY IS HERE
We’re thrilled to be partnering with researchers from Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia on cutting-edge technology that could revolutionize care for people living with Parkinson’s disease—all from the comfort of home.
Using wearable haptic devices and motion-tracking software, this innovative approach helps guide movement and encourage consistent physical therapy—something proven to slow the progression of Parkinson’s.
One of the inspiring participants in this study is David Seriff, a dedicated Rock Steady Boxing client right here at our Fitness Center. This opportunity was made possible thanks to the incredible support and collaboration of our fitness and rehab team.
This is the future of accessible care—and it’s happening in our own backyard.

HELLO, GARDENING SEASON!
Nothing beats the taste of fresh, in-season fruits and veggies—and your body, budget, and the planet agree!
Seasonal produce is picked at peak ripeness, meaning more nutrients, better flavor, and lower prices. It also supports the environment by cutting down on water use, shipping, and pollution.
Ready to shop fresh and local? Visit the Floyd, Blacksburg, or Christiansburg farmer’s markets and look for these June favorites in Virginia:
Fruits: Blueberries, cherries, cantaloupe, kiwi, peaches, watermelon, blackberries, strawberries
Veggies: Cucumbers, green beans, onions
Grab your market bag and savor the season!

HUGS ARE GOOD FOR YOUR BRAIN
Did you know that hugs aren’t just comforting—they’re also great for your brain? That’s right! A good hug can lift your mood, reduce stress, and even boost memory.
Here are just a few brain-boosting benefits of a hug:
-
Increased happiness – Hugs release serotonin and dopamine, the “feel-good” chemicals that lift your mood.
-
Reduced stress – Oxytocin, often called the “cuddle hormone,” lowers cortisol (your stress hormone).
-
Improved memory – Oxytocin may enhance memory, especially in emotional and social situations.
-
Stronger social bonds – Hugs build trust and a sense of connection, key to mental health.
-
Boosted immune system – That same oxytocin helps your body fight infection.
-
Reduced anxiety – A hug can calm your nervous system and ease anxious thoughts.
Bonus: Hugs are free—and when you give one, you get one, too!
So go ahead, hug someone today. Your brain will thank you.
For those facing memory loss, connection and comfort are essential. The Arbor at the Kroontje Health Care Center offers a safe, nurturing memory care setting, and space is currently available.
