Tufts University Undergraduate Orientation
Sustainability at Tufts
August 10, 2021
Hello Jumbos,
Today we introduce you to the Office of Sustainability and Tufts Eco-Reps.

Meet the Office of Sustainability

The Office of Sustainability (OOS) serves as a resource, a catalyst, and an advocate for environmental sustainability at Tufts and often serves as the bridge between ideas and their practical implementation. Supported by the university, we work on many things including:
  • Educate the Tufts community on sustainable living, behavior change, and recycling
  • Reduce waste and energy use at Tufts
  • Initiate programs and planning to work towards Tufts' carbon neutrality goal

Recycling at Tufts

The Recycling Team coordinates the recycling, specialty recycling, and compost programs across the four Tufts campuses. Further, the team works on educational programs and content and runs zero-waste events, waste reduction, and more.
If you have questions, please email recycle@tufts.edu.

Tips for a Sustainable Move-In

Moving into a new space can create a lot of waste. When packing, consider using reusable containers such as plastic storage boxes or suitcases. If you have a roommate, coordinate with them to see if you can share any items. Also, buying used items is always recommended because reusing saves energy and carbon emissions from the production of new items. For more tips, read our blog.

Helpful Resources

Are you interested in taking a sustainability-related course? Last year, the Eco-Reps, an OOS-backed group of students responsible for encouraging environmentally responsible behavior, compiled a sustainability course guide with courses from every undergraduate department at Tufts.
Interested in joining a sustainability-focused student group? Learn more about the variety of options.
The Tufts Eco-Map shows various locations on and around Tufts' campuses that may help with your efforts to be sustainable. From sustainability landmarks such as solar panels to important recycling stations like our plastic film specialty recycling bins, this map is a useful resource to have bookmarked in order to live sustainably at Tufts.
Become Sustainability Certified! By completing this training, you will learn all the sustainability basics at Tufts, from understanding the three pillars of sustainability to environmental justice to the correct recycling rules. When you complete the training, you will receive a sticker to rep your certification, your name on the Office of Sustainability website, and a badge to put on your email signature.
Interested in a shorter training that is just on the recycling rules in MA? Complete our quick Recycling Training.

Keep an Eye Out for Us at Orientation!

Take the Tufts Eco-Tour! Keep an eye out for QR codes located around different sustainability-related spots on campus such as the Office of Sustainability, compost toters, and the Tufts Student Garden. Simply scan the QR code to learn more about these locations.
We look forward to welcoming you to Tufts and answering all of your sustainability questions in person in September! Look out for the Eco-Reps table at the Campus Center on September 5 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for some sustainable goodies! Finally, stop by the Distler Auditorium on September 6th at 5pm and 7:30pm to catch the Eco Reps as they serve as co-sponsors of this year’s Orientation a cappella shows!
