The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita hosted its inaugural Golden Keeper Banquet on April 18, recognizing outstanding students, residents and faculty. The Department of Family & Community Medicine was well represented among the honorees.
Family Medicine award recipients included Anna Rempel, M.D. (Spirit of Kansas Award); Tessa Rohrberg, M.D. (Outstanding Faculty in Family Medicine); and Anne Ast, D.O. (Outstanding Resident in Family Medicine). The department also received the Outstanding Clerkship Award.
Incoming FM residents Madeline Weishuhn, M.D., and Dania Jumpa, M.D., received the P.G. Czarlinsky Award, while Jumpa also earned the Distinguished George E. “Ned” Burket, M.D., Family & Community Medicine Award. Brenda Aguirre Apodaca, M.D., received the Conrad Osborne, M.D., Family & Community Medicine Award. The event celebrated "the excellence, mentorship and community that make KU School of Medicine-Wichita extraordinary," said Dean Laura Tatpati, M.D.

DR. ALLEN'S ADVOCACY HELPS SHAPE KANSAS HEALTH POLICY |

Patrick Allen, M.D., Ascension Via Christi faculty, recently helped advance a major public health initiative in Kansas with the passage of HB 2250, making Kansas the 49th state to explicitly legalize and protect physicians and providers who prescribe Expedited Partner Therapy. The law allows clinicians to treat the sexual partners of patients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections, helping reduce transmission and improve access to care.
Dr. Allen testified before both Senate and House health committees and worked with Sen. Dr. Bill Clifford, who sponsored the bill. Dr. Allen later attended the bill signing with Gov. Laura Kelly and received a signed copy, marking a significant milestone after years of advocacy.

Presented by the Kansas Academy of Family Physicians, this prestigious honor recognizes a career of exceptional service, leadership and unwavering dedication to the specialty of family medicine.

Congratulations to Dulcinea Rakestraw, Ph.D., on receiving HRSA grant funding to expand street medicine training within our family medicine residency programs. Gretchen Irwin, M.D., serves as the principal investigator. This innovative project will prepare future family physicians to provide compassionate, patient-centered care for people experiencing homelessness through hands-on clinical experiences, interprofessional collaboration and training focused on behavioral health, substance use treatment and social determinants of health. The initiative aims to improve healthcare access for vulnerable populations while fostering advocacy, empathy and community engagement among residents.
Cassie Scripter, M.D., and Staci Thomas, D.O., provided sports medicine coverage for more than 1,100 athletes at the USA Gymnastics Kansas State Gymnastics Championships in Andover March 27-29.
Tessa Rohrberg, M.D., had a grant selected for funding from the Medical Alumni Innovative Teaching Fund. A Pilot Evaluation of Ambient AI-Enhanced Feedback During Standardized Patient Examinations in a Fam Med Bootcamp Elective.
Samantha Vermetten, MS3 and FMIG co-president, was awarded the 2026 Family Medicine Leads Scholarship, provided by the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation.
Family Medicine Interest Group served 2,096 students this year through the vape program, up from 2,005 last year.
Stephanie Murray, M.D., was promoted to associate professor on the clinical scholar track.
Jennifer Thuener, M.D., was promoted to associate professor on the clinical scholar track.
Katie Kellerman, MHCL, C-TAGME, KUSM-W family medicine residency coordinator at Wesley, earned certification in graduate medical education training administration through the National Board for Certification of Training Administrators of Graduate Medical Education.
