SGA Celebrates again in Scenic Maine
The Senior Golfers first held its summertime event in the Pine Tree State in 1985. This area is always a favorite with SGA members as they balance out their golf play with sightseeing, boating, browsing local museums and shops, and especially, enjoying lobster at every meal.  The trip to Maine with its cool temperatures was especially welcome as much of the United States was recording July temperatures in the 90s and higher. The cool weather, along with the stunning natural beauty of the golf course at Samoset Resort, was absolutely wonderful.
The event began with drinks and dinner overlooking the Samoset Course and Penobscot Bay. SGA Hall of Fame members Mary Ann Calvert and Bill Suehs were recognized. SGA newcomers Christie & Dale Moulton and Julie Snyder were introduced, and details were given for the week's events.
After the three cool and sometimes misty days of golf, SGA 2024 Caribbean Soul winners Mary Ann Calvert and Jim Snyder were winners at gross for the event. "As always, I've had a great week here in Maine," said Mary Ann. "Dan and I have been coming to Maine every summer for quite a few years. It's great to escape the heat of Houston, and I am proud to say I have had lobster every single day I have been here. Thanks, everyone, and I hope to be with you here again next summer."
"I really enjoyed the Samoset course," added Jim.  "It was not too long, but it was challenging.  I did not tire from playing it multiple times and would do so again.  I thought the resort was very nice as well, with some interesting local activities and food options available. Of course it's always great to be a winner!"
Low Net winners were Dan Calvert and Mary Tebben. Close to pin winners were Mary Ann Calvert, Nonie Price, Jim Snyder, and Mary Tebben. Best Ball Team was Bill Suehs and Mary Ann and Dan Calvert. Putting winners were Christie Moulton and Jim Snyder, first, Dan and Mary Ann Calvert, second, and Christie and Dale Moulton, third. Congratulations to all!
The Senior Golfers will return to Maine in September of 2025. Plan to be there!

Happy 104th Birthday to oldest lobsterman in the world -- the Lobster Lady of Maine

ROCKLAND, Maine — Virginia "Ginny" Oliver, also known as Maine's "Lobster Lady," turned 104 on June 7, 2024.
Despite her admirable age, Virginia still goes out lobstering. Wayne Gray, who attended her birthday celebration, reported that, while she hasn't hit the water just yet this year, she did renew her fishing license and plans to haul some traps.
Lobstering isn't the only thing Virginia is recognized for. Most recently, she was offered a membership in the Cardiff Royal Naval Association in Great Britain, and proudly accepted it.
Her son Max, who just turned 80, also is still lobstering and plans to put his traps in the water this year. Ginny started lobstering with her father and older brother when she was just eight years old, making this her 96th year hauling traps.
Born on Claredon Street in Rockland at her parents' home in June of 1920, the centenarian still lives on the same street but in a different house where she raised her four children. All four of her children lobster, and her late husband did, too.
Virginia told the local TV station that what she likes best about lobstering is "being the boss." She said she doesn't go out if she doesn't want to, and loves the independence that life on the water has afforded her and her family.
"I'm still the boss," says Ginny Oliver, the Lobster Lady.
