Help Students Settle Into Their New Home
Join us in Allendale on Monday, August 19, as we welcome our newest Lakers to their home-away-from-home! Volunteer to help move in these students and provide their parents some peace of mind, too. You'll receive a t-shirt at check-in and breakfast and lunch will be available.

DaMar Boyd not only earned his degree from Grand Valley, but he also met his wife here! As a proud Laker, he has spoken on alumni panels to undergraduates, given career advice, and looks forward to being more involved. One of his favorite memories was when his oldest daughter saw him walk across the stage at commencement.

President Mantella Tours Campuses During First Week
On July 1, Philomena V. Mantella began her new role as Grand Valley's fifth president and has toured facilities and buildings on the Allendale and Pew campuses. She also met with students, faculty, staff, and community leaders including representatives from Student Senate and local elected officials. "This has been an amazing first week," Mantella said. "I am inspired, energized, and it already feels like home. Thank you to all of the GVSU community for a warm welcome!"

GVSU Faculty Member, Students Play Key Role in USA Today Investigation
Jeff Kelly Lowenstein, assistant professor of multimedia journalism, is the co-author of a USA Today story detailing a reverse mortgage foreclosure crisis that has hit predominantly African-American neighborhoods at a rate that is six times higher than neighborhoods that are primarily white. In addition, three Grand Valley students contributed to the report.

Teen Entrepreneurs Win $5,000 for Ideas to Combat Poverty
More than 45 students from 24 area high schools worked with Grand Valley faculty members and students to brainstorm ways to create economic growth opportunities that can lead to a reduction in poverty rates and increase access to services.
The summer camp was hosted by the Richard M. and Helen DeVos Center for Entrepreneurship. The winning team took home a $2,500 prize for their idea, called Generation Connection, that would pair a senior living facility with a day care center.

GVSU Jamie Hosford Football Center
Expanded Hosford Football Center Called 'Home Win'
More than 500 people celebrated the dedication of Grand Valley's renovated and expanded football center on June 19. Named for the most decorated athlete in Grand Valley's history, enhancements to the Jamie Hosford Football Center will help recruit prospective student athletes while providing the university's current 575 student athletes access to an updated athletic and rehabilitation training room.
Donor-funded renovations to the two-story, 22,000-square-foot building include an expanded locker room, larger athletic training/rehabilitation room, all-team meeting room, and spaces for equipment maintenance, storage, and laundry.

Five Lakers Earn GLIAC Spring Commissioner's Award Honors
Five Grand Valley State Lakers earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Commissioner's Award honors for the 2019 Spring season. The Commissioner's Award is among the highest conference honors, blending the best academic and athletic performances for a given season. Congratulations to Sarah Beulla, Shannon Flaherty and Carly Shisler, along with Sebastien Lescoulie, and Alex Scott!

Laker Athletes Earn CoSID Academic All Honors
Grand Valley State's Josh Steible, Sarah Berger, Madison Goen, Hanna Groeber and Gina Patterson have all been named 2019 Google Cloud NCAA Division II Academic All-Americans for cross country and track & field. Congratulations to these Lakers on their academic and athletic achievements!

Club Sport Highlight: GVSU Rifle Wins Third Straight Mid-State Rifle League Championship
The GVSU Rifle Club wrapped up matches nine and ten in the Mid-State Rifle League. The league consisted of 70 competitors on nine teams from Michigan and Wisconsin. For the third straight season, the Lakers are the league champions.
