Registration is now open for the spring virtual Planning AHEAD series!

Planning AHEAD is a comprehensive end-of-life planning program for all ages developed by UW–Madison Division of Extension faculty and staff. The series includes 7 one-hour sessions that are grounded in research to lead participants in understanding how to prepare for the end-of-life for themselves or a loved one, and why it’s important to have a plan in place. The program topic areas are: Getting Started, Handling Financial Changes, Advance Medical and Legal Directives, Estate Planning, Choices in End-of-Life Care, Final Wishes and Understanding Grief. This program is open to anyone over the age of 18. You can never start planning too early! 

Dairy operations today depend on well trained employees to consistently produce high quality milk. Yet many farms face workforce challenges such as high turnover, language differences, limited formal education, and employees who are new to agriculture. These realities make structured, ongoing training not optional but essential. Clear expectations, repetition, and hands-on training and evaluation, directly influence how cows are milked and cared for. Because milk quality and udder health are closely tied to daily routines, investing in employee training, especially around a consistent, standardized milking procedure, is one of the most effective ways to reduce mastitis, meet processor standards, and protect farm profitability.

Elementary‑age kids are growing fast, developing independence, and navigating big emotions. UW–Madison Extension offers practical, research‑based tools to help families guide cooperation, manage feelings, and build strong social skills. The site also includes resources for children with a parent in jail or prison, plus quick five‑minute parenting videos for busy caregivers. It’s a helpful hub for anyone raising or supporting school‑age kids.

When young people are given a meaningful role in their activities, they learn conflict resolution, communication, and responsibility. How much “say” do youth have in your organization’s programs? Are there ways that your organization’s priorities could be better met with some adjustments in how young people participate? 

Use the questions in this reflection tool to spur discussions with your coworkers, volunteers, and young people. The results of your intentionality will be evident as youth grow into workforce-ready, engaged adults.

Most graziers value pasturing their livestock because these systems work with ruminants’ natural behaviors and herd instincts, reducing stress for both the handler and the animal. However, there are times when graziers need to work with livestock on the farmers’ terms, pushing the limits of the animals’ comfort zone. Moving animals to an unfamiliar area, sorting animals for weaning, corralling animals for health checks, or loading animals onto a trailer are all normal activities for a grazing operation that put pressure on livestock. While everyday grazing activities may be the most enjoyable part of managing a grazing operation, these less routine animal handling activities may be an obstacle to the overall success or enjoyment of the operation if basic animal handling skills and facilities are lacking.
