Beloved Students,
What a strange, difficult time we are in. My heart breaks for you (and particularly for the seniors), that you will not have the opportunities you thought you would have, and that life has changed so much in a short period of time.
Contradictions are all around us: social distancing is an expression of social solidarity. We must act decisively and quickly so we can slow down and take care. It is precisely because of our shared, solid, and known values as a college community that we can continue with confidence into the unknown. Our cancelled gatherings do not, should not, and cannot mean cancelled connection. We still need to be “here” for each other, but in a different way. Rhodes College is and will always be your home, even during your time in the wilderness.
Here are a few opportunities for you to stay connected:
- Pen Pals Program - Opt in be assigned two other Rhodes students to keep in touch with once a week until the Fall. Email weilb@rhodes.edu with the subject line “Pen Pals” to sign up.
- Follow the Chaplain’s Office on Instagram for spiritual and emotional health posts.
- Weekly Zoom meetings for multiplying joys and dividing sorrows - Join my Zoom room every Monday at 12 p.m. (Central) from next week through at least April to lift up joys, sorrows, thoughts, prayers, intentions, etc. for the community. You can also email such requests to me at weilb@rhodes.edu and I will lift them for you.
Additionally, I will be available via video chat and phone calls for emotional and spiritual support. Please email weilb@rhodes.edu to set up an appointment.
Faith traditions and folklore tell stories of figures who spent time on mountaintops, in caves, and in the desert yet emerged transformed. May we each find ways to stay grounded and grateful during this time in the wilderness. Take time to breathe, explore and set the boundaries you need in your new setting, and look for things that give you hope.
Yours,
Chaplain Beatrix
