BOOK CLUB - Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn
With the onset of colder weather, is your child wondering why they have to stop wearing shorts and need to wear a jacket in the mornings? Try reading Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn to help them understand the transition to fall. You can also see the newsletter below for some fall activities and events to get them excited for the season.
LITERACY AND NUMERACY - Labels
Have you ever noticed that classrooms for young children have a ton of labels, usually with words and pictures? Everything from the crayons to the cubbies may be labeled, and there is actually a good reason for this. Labels help create a print-rich learning environment that increases opportunities for children to use words and language in purposeful ways. The pictures on the labels provide children with visual cues so they can interpret useful information, like where the crayons go or which cubby is theirs; over time, this process fosters word recognition.
See the Developmental Milestone section below for ideas on incorporating labels into routines.
ARTS & CRAFTS - Leaf Rubbing
As the leaves begin to fall from the trees, try the leaf rubbing craft below.
Materials Needed:
  • Leaves
  • Crayons
  • White Paper (thin paper works best)
Directions:
  • Collect leaves that are various sizes and shapes.
  • Place the leaves down on a table with their bottom sides facing up.
  • Cover the leaves with a piece of white paper.
  • Using the side of a crayon without a wrapper, gently rub the crayon over the areas with the leaves.
  • After your paper is filled, ask your child what they noticed about the leaves. How are the leaves similar and different? What parts of the leaves do they notice?
DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONE -Routines
Young children thrive on predictable routines that their parents create and manage. However, once your child has mastered an established routine, try letting them manage it on their own. For example, during bedtime, let your child run through the routine independently and take responsibility for it.
To help develop routines at home, Fay Kindergarten teacher Anne Canada suggests using visual checklists. For example, the visual checklist for bedtime could be a picture of pajamas, a toothbrush, and a book. This reminds your child to follow the bedtime routine of getting their PJs on, brushing their teeth, and then picking out a book to read. “Keep the lists short and manageable,” suggests Anne. “It lets your child know that these are the things that they are responsible for doing.

PARENTING ADVICE - Four Tips for Building Organizational Skills
For many children, Kindergarten is the first real test of their organizational skills. School papers, water bottles, hats, mittens, and other personal items may consistently come home in your child’s backpack, or they may regularly disappear into the ether. The good news is that no matter which camp your child falls into - neatnik or a little scattered, you can boost their organizational skills with some practice at home. Fay Kindergarten teacher Anne Canada shares her tips for preparing your child for the organizational expectations and routines of Kindergarten.
