Wonders & Worries Newsletter - February 2016
The Dawson Family Story
“Wonders & Worries was there to step in and really helped us relate my cancer to our kids when we were trying to figure it out ourselves as parents.”
–Eric Dawson
Eric Dawson and his wife Mariela reached out to Wonders & Worries when the treatment for Eric’s multiple myeloma would keep them away from their kids for at least 6 weeks as they traveled back and forth to MD Anderson. Six years and many more treatments later, they are still sharing their story of how Wonders & Worries has helped them as a family.
Donor Highlight:
The Halder Family

Creative Illness Education
At Wonders & Worries, we teach kids about their parent’s illness and help make medical terms and supplies less scary. For example, our Saturday group members created their own medical friends using surgical hats, gloves, booties, tongue depressors and much more.  We love and encourage their creativity!
Monthly Therapeutic Tip
Sharing Your Love Through Shoebox Mail
A fun ongoing activity to help bolster positive family communication is to make a mailbox (empty shoe boxes work great or Hobby Lobby has wooden ones with a flag you can put up) where you can leave encouraging notes for your child and they in turn can leave messages for you. A simple note with a sticker that mentions something you love about them can go a very long way.
You can also encourage your child to write down any questions they may have about things for you. Sometimes children feel safer writing things than saying it out loud.
Have fun with it and be sure to save special notes as keepsakes!

24 Hours to Crank up the Giving and raise $9 million for local nonprofits!
Amplify Austin is a 24-hour day of community-wide giving that provides an easy and fun way for our entire community to give together and help hundreds of local nonprofits meet critical needs.
Wonders & Worries has a goal to raise $7,500 through Amplify Austin this year. This will allow us to provide 10 children with six weeks of therapeutic support and parent consults, using our copyrighted Illness Education and Coping Curriculum.

How You Can Support Us!
Set up your own Amplify Austin fundraiser for Wonders & Worries and help us raise funds and awareness with your network of friends and family!
Thank You AECOM
AECOM employees have supported our Wonders & Worries Hoping Heart family fun event for the last nine years through their time, talent, and treasure. Thank you to the employees that volunteered their time this year to put so many smiles on the faces of our client families!
Consider making an investment in the mission of Wonders & Worries so we can provide more professional support for children through a parent's illness.
