Portuguese minister for economy visits MIT
Portuguese Minister for Economy, António Pires de Lima, visited MIT on Dec. 12 as part of a short visit to the United States. Pires de Lima visited the MIT Portugal Program headquarters at the invitation of program director Dava Newman. They were joined by MIT Portugal focus-area leads and researchers from MIT and Portugal. The economy minister emphasized the "great level of satisfaction" with the partnerships between Portugal and U.S. institutions, with MIT Portugal being of central importance. €400,000 have been awarded to the startup finalists of the Building Global Innovators program 2014
100,000.00 in financial support has been awarded to each of the finalists of the 2014/2015 edition of the Building Global Innovators (BGI) – IUL MIT Portugal Caixa Capital Accelerator. An expert Jury panel chose the four finalists – one for each of BGI’s tracks:
  • nuRise,“Medical Technologies and Health IT” Awardee
  • Lokkupp, “Smart Cities and Industrial Technologies” Awardee
  • doDoc, “Enterprise IT & Smart Data” Awardee
  • Corpower Ocean, “Ocean Economy” Awardee.
MPP Faculty member will lead European Project on Parkinson and Machado-Joseph Diseases
Luís Pereira de Almeida, Researcher at Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) of Coimbra’s University, is going to lead a new European project funded by the Joint Program -Neurodegenerative Disease Research (JPND ). The researcher, also a MIT Portugal Bioengineering Faculty Member, will coordinate a multidisciplinary team of researchers from University of Luxembourg and University Paris Descartes, which aim to identify potential therapeutic targets in Parkinson's and Machado -Joseph disease.The project, entitled " SynSpread " will have the duration of three years and total budget of 750,000 euros

Mars One is giving university teams from around the world the opportunity to compete for an incredible chance that consists of their payload flying to the surface of Mars on board of the 2018 Mars Lander. One of the 10 finalists is a Portuguese team, SEED, which counts with the MIT Portugal PhD candidate, Raquel Almeida. The aim of the project is to germinate the first seed on Mars and to prove the concept that it is possible to germinate and grow plants on Mars. You can vote  by:
