Fueling our mission through shared experiences |
Sharing our personal stories with our wider community is an empowering and courageous act. These instances of vulnerability challenge us as collaborators, clarify our personal missions, and connect us with individuals who share similar values. Tackling issues related to inequity and discrimination without a network that accepts us fully adds an unnecessary layer of challenge to our goals. We encourage you to seek spaces that will bring you genuine connection and support. Read through our highlights below for a recap of some of the community-building events and spaces we had the opportunity to be a part of this month.

Latino Community Resource Group celebrates Women’s History Month
In honor of Women’s History Month and in partnership with KEEN Footwear, our Latino Community Resource group hosted a Collaborative Dialogue with Latina Professionals: Emerging Momentum event. The incredible panel of speakers included Mariana Zaragoza, Ph.D., Maíra Andrade de Carvalho, and Ana Lucia Fonseca. The conversation centered the lived experience of Latinas, while exploring challenges such as imposter syndrome and the systemic barriers that keep underrepresented communities from achieving their full potential. It was our largest community resource group event to date, and we appreciate all who joined the conversation either in person or remotely and look forward to seeing you at our next event.

Equity Conversations: Workplace Investigations with Michael Tom
Workplace investigations have serious consequences for the people and companies involved. Following the murder of George Floyd and the COVID pandemic, the kinds of claims and investigations have shifted as employees become more aware of social and racial issues. In this episode of Equity Conversations, we speak with Michael Tom, founder of Northwest Workplace Investigations, to discuss these changes. He also shares one case study and how diversity, equity and inclusion played a role and what employers can learn from it. Click here for a transcript of the episode.

Lessons from our latest Breakfast for Champions session
Onboarding is something we want to get right, both as new employees and as hiring managers. The design of this process not only influences the long-term experience of new employees, but also greatly affects the quality of our organizational culture. Last month, Partners in Diversity teamed with Daesha Ramachandran and Steph Farnum from Tusk Consulting to explore the ins and outs of what makes an inclusive onboarding experience and the pitfalls that often lead to unintended experiences. Attendees spent the session dreaming up their ideal onboarding packages and experiences, while centering inclusivity and the human experience.

Partners in Diversity’s very own Tracey Lam, Director of Programs and Communications, joined the Women’s BIPOC Speaker Series at Mary's Woods last month to share her personal journey as a Chinese immigrant woman exploring her identity in the United States. Tracey opened up about how her various identities have influenced her work and passions, how she maintains connection with her heritage, and the healing spaces and support systems she has built to support herself and others.

Partners in Diversity had the pleasure of attending and co-sponsoring the Leadership Stories from AAPI Women event alongside Portland State University and the Asian Pacific American Women’s Leadership Institute. An evening filled with genuine and personal storytelling; the panel spoke on their journeys as women of color rising into leadership positions. From navigating difficult systems to diving into challenges without feeling completely ready, the stories resonated with many attendees. We’d like to extend a special thank you to Nadia Hasan, Irene Niedo, and Kianna J. Angelo for sharing their experiences with the community.
