The MIND Diet and Alzheimer’s Prevention

by Jen Rose MS, RD
A study performed by Rush Medical University in Chicago, Illinois has revealed that the MIND Diet may reduce the Risk of Alzheimer’s by 50%, and up to 35% when not followed rigorously. The Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay (MIND) combines the recommendations from the Mediterranean Diet (focusing on healthy fats, omega-3s, fresh produce, and whole grains) along with the DASH Diet (focusing on fruits/vegetables and low fat dairy) to form a powerful, brain-boosting nutrition lifestyle. Researchers from Rush evaluated over 900 seniors that participated in the Rush Memory & Aging Project, studying the aging process. Over the course of time, it was revealed that those who followed the MIND Diet, lowered the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by 53%! They were able to breakdown the components of MIND into 15 elements: ten brain healthy foods and five unhealthy foods. The ten brain healthy foods include: green leafy vegetables, other vegetables (a variety), nuts, berries, beans, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil, and wine. The five unhealthy foods include: red meat, butter and stick margarine, cheese, pastries/sweets, and fried/fast foods. Interestingly, berries were identified as the only singled-out fruit to make it to the list as they are potent in brain-boosting antioxidants. This study adds a body of knowledge to what we currently know about brain health and the aging process. Further studies should be pursued to gain confirmatory evidence and further information on nutrition correlating with the Alzheimer’s process. The study was funded by the National Institute on Aging and performed by researchers from Rush University along with Frank M. Sacks, MD (chaired the committee of the DASH Diet).
