Dear Parents and Families,
I hope this finds you enjoying the first few weeks of spring. Here at Tufts, we’re getting ready for Spring Fling Weekend, preparing for final exams, and making plans for Commencement on May 20th. It’s hard to believe we’re already so close to the end of the 2018-19 academic year! As the Medical Director for Tufts’ Health Service, it’s my job to support students’ health and, in turn, their overall Tufts experience. To that end, I’m writing with a few quick tips and pieces of information to help your student enjoy a strong finish this spring and have a healthy start next fall.

Help Your Student Build Resiliency

Whether it’s a poor score on an exam or a job/internship rejection, college setbacks go hand-in-hand with developing resiliency. Here are some tips as you support your student in challenging times:
  • Be realistic, yet keep the conversation upbeat. Remind them of their talents, skills, and experience and encourage them to stay focused on the "big picture." Help them identify times when they’ve demonstrated resilience; can they apply similar strategies to other areas of life?
  • Invite honesty and openness. If students fear they will disappoint you/others, you may not hear what’s on their minds. Your attitude and expectations set the tone.
  • Use open-ended questions. “Tell me about …”, “What are your thoughts on …?” “How do you feel about …?”
  • Resist the urge to intervene. Allowing students to face smaller stressors independently will strengthen resiliency for the future (broadly referred to as the stress inoculation theory, i.e., one is better able to adapt to stressors if he/she has some prior experience).
