Good morning, colleagues. Here is the update from Academic Affairs.
The spring semester will be a pivot point for UWM. Governance groups will provide key input on much-needed General Education reform and I also value their views on the refreshed 2030 Action Plan. Deans and their leadership teams will be submitting preliminary program analyses, identifying opportunities for reinvesting resources into programs of significance, prominence, and growth (full plans will be submitted this summer). This semester will see new transfer agreements, the development of a stronger pre-college to UWM pipeline, and further progress on Moon Shot for Equity goals, including work on academic probation and a renewed focus on improving course outcomes with CETL’s Educators Institute. The divisions of Academic Affairs and Finance and Administrative Affairs will explore budget model revisions to reduce the need for subvention and to enable investments in research and areas of academic opportunity.
My responsibility as provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs is to foster a shared sense of where we need to go, demonstrating how Academic Affairs operations are interconnected in ways that can either constrain or enable our success.
To that end, on January 26, I am convening an Academic Affairs Administrative Summit to share information on how UWM can achieve greater levels of inclusive excellence and student success, how UWM compares to peer institutions, and to discuss the proposed 2030 Plan framework in the context of school/college planning. Participants will include governance group representatives, deans and their leadership teams, the Student Association, department chairs, Academic Affairs staff, and university leaders.
Following the summit, and throughout the semester, I will communicate on the top priorities of student success, increased externally funded research, and an approach to budget and finance that enables us to meet our goals. These priorities will be moved forward through initiatives focused on R1 expectations and functions; innovative and market-driven curriculum; culturally responsive and inclusive classroom pedagogy and practice; and improving efforts toward a supporting environment and campus community.
I’m looking forward to a great semester of working together, harnessing our collective talents and creativity to advance our mission.

I would like to appreciate Joan Shapiro Beigh (Business) and Mair Culbreth (Dance) for applying to the Wisconsin Teaching Fellows and Scholars (WTFS) program sponsored by Universities of Wisconsin Office of Professional and Instructional Development (OPID). They were competitively selected to represent UWM for this unique opportunity that will allow them to collaborate with other exceptional teachers from across the UW System. Congratulations, Joan and Mair!
I would also like to appreciate undergraduate student Adam LuMaye, who received the 2023 Wisconsin Music Educators Association Richard G. Gaarder Award, which recognizes his exceptional leadership, musical excellence, and service to the campus and community. Professor Nicki Roman noted that he is only one of two music students across Wisconsin to be recognized and praised Adam as “a curious, creative, and hardworking student who has gone above and beyond during his four years at UWM.” Well done, Adam!

During the fall semester, Joan Shapiro Beigh taught an evening class with a mix of traditional and non-traditional students. She reported that many were older, some were veterans. A handful of the non-traditional students struggled with the technology of submitting assignments on Canvas, as well as working with projects on Google Drive. They felt frustrated and a couple thought about quitting. Dr. Shapiro described how heartwarming it was to see the traditional students helping the non-traditional students, week-by-week until they got the hang of it! She further elaborated, “It really embodied the friendliness and warmth I’ve noticed in the people of Milwaukee. I’m a new teaching professor and have been so pleased to join such a wonderful group of people at UWM.”
